Heggeland’s baseline spin move and dunk electrified the Darien gymnasium, and Wheaton North held on for a 49-41 nonconference victory over the Hornets.

The Hornets threw that defense at the Fremd standout junior on Saturday afternoon in Palatine. Gorecki was once again up to the challenge, tying her career-high of 31 points as the Vikings tuned up for Wednesday’s Mid-Suburban League championship game against Rolling Meadows with a 62-37 victory over Hinsdale South.

Wobble too much or fall and you might be left wondering, “What could have been?” Naperville North doesn’t have to answer that question, nor did the Huskies shed any tears after they won Wednesday’s Naperville North regional with 138.3 points, finishing comfortably ahead of runner-up Oswego co-op’s 133.975.

In Saturday night’s key West Suburban Conference Gold battle, host Hinsdale South was well aware of Willowbrook’s game plan to run the floor with an up-tempo attack. But after a solid first quarter, the Hornets found themselves in a bit of foul trouble, and before they knew it the Warriors had run off a 23-2 blitz in the second quarter on their way to a 58-38 victory that keeps Willowbrook (14-2) atop the league standings at 5-0.

    The lower-weight strength of Glenbard East started an avalanche of key victories and helped provide a huge shot in the arm for the title hopes of the Rams after the first day of the 59th annual Berman Holiday Wrestling Classic on Friday at Palatine High School. Carlos Fuentes (106), Anfarnee Rodgers (120), Dayton Olson (126) and Jake Drew (132) opened the quarterfinals with victories for coach Kevin Carlson’s team to fuel a 66-point session and give the Rams 113 overall points. That’s 9.5 more than Class 2A power Oak Forest and 13 points better than defending champ Hinsdale Central (100). Lincoln-Way West (90) and East (85) rounded out the top five; action resumes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
