Everyone in the gym knew James Pupillo would take the last-second shot. Until he passed it. Pupillo’s pinpoint feed to Simon Jakubczak led to a buzzer-beating layup and Saturday’s 44-42 West Suburban Gold Conference victory for Addison Trail’s boys basketball team over Hinsdale South in Darien.

"We had our fingers crossed, since we didn't know what the judges would be looking for," said Sue Kawecki, coach of the Maine East Demon Squad, that also advanced at the Palatine sectional, with a kick routine.

Senior forward Phil Schuetz of Aurora Central Catholic and senior guard Toni Romiti of Hinsdale South have earned MVP honors from the Daily Herald for their recent basketball performances. Schuetz had 34 points and 6 steals to lead the Chargers to a 4-point win over Joliet Catholic, while Romiti scored 40, 25 and 19 in victories over West Suburban Conference competition.

Hinsdale Central edged Barrington for the team championship in Hinsdale South's College Events invitational on Saturday. The Red Devils finished at 266, with Barrington close behind at 259 points. Wheaton Co-op was third (190), followed by Waubonsie Valley (174), Naperville Central (167), Lake Park (120) and Fremd (94).

Senior Andrew Zelis and his Wheaton North boys basketball teammates were anxious to finally start their season Tuesday in Wheaton, but the first half didn’t go so well offensively. The Falcons trailed Hinsdale South by as many as 11 points. The 6-foot-11, Stetson University-bound Zelis, the Falcons’ top returning scorer, had 2 points on just two shot attempts.
