Dramatic turn of events for Willowbrook Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Angela Bruno was determined to get her atonement. Twice Willowbrook's senior point guard turned over the basketball in the final minute, allowing Hinsdale Central to take away the lead, but Bruno's hustle steal led to Melissa Rader's basket with 4.1 seconds left, the No. 13 Warriors winning 57-56 on Wednesday in Villa Park in a wild finish.

For Naperville North it’s not about the points Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Naperville North won't be taking its team to compete at state next weekend. The thing is, it doesn't really matter to the Huskies, because they've already won plenty this year. After a surprise victory in the DuPage Valley Conference and then a fantastic regional, the Huskies put the final touch on their team season by taking third in Wednesday's Hinsdale Central sectional with a season-best 139.575 points. No one was going to beat Lyons Twp. anyway; the Lions very well could be crowned state champions next week. The Lions scored 149.25 points while Hinsdale Central was a distant second with a 140.9. Neuqua Valley placed sixth with a 134.75.

Metea Valley rallies for 20th victory Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Lori Obendorf can’t play with injured Metea Valley teammate Anna Petersen anymore, but Petersen’s embrace was the first place Obendorf went to celebrate a win Friday. “We’re kind of best friends. We hug a lot,” Obendorf said. “I really miss having her on the court.” Obendorf and the Mustangs are down two starters now, but they proved Friday they’re not out. Down 9 midway through the third quarter at Hinsdale Central, No. 9 Metea Valley rallied for a 51-50 win, reaching the 20-win benchmark for the first time in the young program’s history.

As usual, shootout won’t be easy for MontiniJan 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Jason Nichols has never won a game at the McDonald’s Shootout, and there’s a good reason for that. He always asks to play the best team available. His Montini teams more often than not get it. This year is no different.

Glenbard North comes up short vs. Hinsdale Central Jan 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Even with Chip Flanigan, Glenbard North’s boys basketball team faced a stiff challenge guarding 6-foot-7 Hinsdale Central sophomore Matt Rafferty. With Flanigan riding the bench due to foul trouble, it became almost impossible to match Rafferty in the post. The Red Devils took advantage of Rafferty’s strength inside while rolling to a 66-46 victory over Glenbard North in Saturday’s Downers North Winter Classic. The talented sophomore scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Hinsdale Central (9-5) dominated the final three quarters.

Michael Cullen was in a class of his own during the two days of competition at the 58th Berman Holiday Wrestling Classic at Palatine High School. A quartet of opponents were unable to stop the Cary-Grove sophomore, whose desire to win a state title at 113 pounds was never more evident than in his superb performance Friday in the Berman championship, where he delivered a 14-4 major decision over Noey Carrillo of Zion-Benton. Cullen's work, plus some strong efforts from his teammates, helped the Trojans secure fifth place overall, just 10 points behind Lyons Township (156-146). A sensational second day of wrestling sent Hinsdale Central past challengers Glenbard East and St. Charles as the Red Devils won their second consecutive team title at Palatine.
