    After spending her entire career thus far at the Niles Public Library, Barbara Kruser will take over as the director of the Helen Plum Memorial Library in Lombard Aug. 18. She hopes to work with staff to get more input from patrons and rearrange the current shelving and furniture. "The library used to be a place that you walked in and took something home with you," she said. "Now it's a place you go to experience."

The library’s board of trustees selected Barbara Kruser to take over the position on Aug. 18, after longtime director Robert Harris retires. Kruser has spent her entire career at the Niles Library, where she was hired as a reference librarian in 1989.

    Anyone curious to learn more about a pedestrian underpass project slated to begin next week in downtown Lombard is welcome to attend an open house Wednesday evening to meet with project officials and ask questions. The open house will run from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the community room of the Helen Plum Memorial Library. The underpass project is part of a $7.8 million makeover of Lombard’s Metra station that includes the addition of canopies and shelters on the platforms, new retaining walls, accessible ramps and landscaping.

    Helen Plum Library patrons with outstanding fines will be granted amnesty if they drop off nonperishable food items for the Lombard-Villa Park food pantry at the circulation desk during National Library Week. The Food-for-Fines program will run from Sunday, April 13, to Saturday, April 19. Each item of nonperishable food that is donated will result in $1 in overdue fines being “paid.”

    Bob Harris says it’s time for Lombard’s Helen Plum Memorial Library to have a youthful leader with new fire, new energy and new ideas. “The town and the library needs that and they deserve it,” the 68-year-old said. In mid-February, Harris announced he is retiring after serving as the library’s director for 25 years. His last day is Aug. 15.

    When Helen Plum Memorial Library Director Bob Harris decided to close the facility early Tuesday afternoon, he didn't want to send a dozen homeless patrons out into the snow. "I didn't want to stay open because of concerns about travel and safety in the storm, but I also didn't want to tell the people waiting for the shelter that we were closed, so I just stayed here," Harris said Thursday. "It just seemed like the right thing to do."

    The Helen Plum Memorial Library in Lombard fixed up its main and second floors in 2009 and 2010 after becoming an independent library district, but the basement didn't see improvements. A $225,615 project the library board recently approved is shifting the focus to the library's lower level. Renovations, scheduled to begin Monday, include new restrooms, a movable dividing wall and small kitchenette for the auditorium and a walled-in storage area under the stairway.

    The basement bathrooms at the Helen Plum Memorial Library in Lombard will be getting a makeover later this year, and the library is seeking grant funding to cover about a quarter of the project’s cost. Accessibility improvements to the restrooms downstairs are part of a $220,000 project that includes conversion of a video projection room into a kitchenette and addition of a movable dividing wall in the multipurpose room, library Director Bob Harris said.

    Library patrons across the region were experiencing slower download times this week thanks to a post-Christmas rush to gobble up free e-books from library websites. The craze hit suburban library cardholders from Aurora to Arlington Heights and from Lombard to Lincolnshire, resulting in slower download times as excited readers looked for material for their new iPads, Nooks or other electronic reading devices known as e-readers.
