Wineries, breweries and food vendors will once again fill Spring Valley Nature Center Saturday, June 22 in honor of the summer solstice. The Schaumburg Park Foundation’s Solstice Hop and Vine Fest will be held from 6-9 p.m., and “the evening features the area’s finest wines and brews on the prairie and supports the Schaumburg Park Foundation,” said Foundation Executive Vice President Pat Casler.

The district has had more success in recruiting Latinos for its Hispanic Parent Leadership Institute than for the black equivalent. “The African-American community has just been so hard to reach out to,” said Karla Guzmán, parent/community outreach coordinator.

But 20 years later, Cherry, a 28-year-old teacher at Prairie View Grade School in Burlington, will direct "iSing: Sounds of a New Generation," which will be presented June 21-23 and June 28-30 at the Elgin Community College Arts Center’s Blizzard Theatre.

A task force charged with developing strategies to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile virus, is proposing the county explore having its nine townships oversee all of DuPage’s abatement efforts.

U-46 grading changes means no score below 50 for studentsJun 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Changes to the Elgin Area School District U-46 grading scale were never intended to be issues requiring school board approval. After weeks of intense opposition by some teachers and parents, the board's newest members — Frank Napolitano and Veronica Noland — pushed for a vote anyway. It isn't going to happen. The change will eliminate the bottom half of the traditional 0-100 scale, making a 50 the lowest grade students can get. The goal is to equalize the interval between each letter grade but opponents say it will reduce achievement.

A former Glenbard East student accused of planning a mass shooting at the Lombard high school’s graduation ceremony has been indicted on one count of felony disorderly conduct, prosecutors said in court Monday. Michael Santoro, 19, of Lombard, entered a formal plea of not guilty to the charge.

A Hanover Park teen has been sentenced to probation and time served in jail for making a false bomb threat at Lake Park High School’s east campus in Roselle. Sharell Thomas, 19, of the 7500 block of Bristol Lane, pleaded guilty Friday to felony disorderly conduct.
