    The Daily Herald's Prep Sports Excellence event Sunday at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates provided a platform to recognize some amazing achievements from the finest high school athletes and coaches. Here are our winners in the categories of dazzling moment, overcoming obstacles, sportsmanship and spirit.

    Team Dance Illinois' Grand Championship was held Sunday, March 2 at the Peoria Civic Center. The event showcases Illinois’ best dance, pom, drill and guard teams competing throughout the event.

     
  • Girls basketball/Fox Valley roundup Feb 7, 2014 11:40 PM
    St. Edward 49, Guerin 33: The Green Wave (15-8) defeated Suburban Christian opponent Guerin during crossover action Friday. Cece Rapp led all scorers with 17 points, while Madelyn Spagnola finished with 11 points and Katie Swanson added 8 points. “Defense was real good and we were pleased with the way we were able to pressure Guerin,” said St. Edward Coach Michelle Dawson. Bartlett 49, Metea Valley 36: Bartlett beat Upstate Eight opponent Metea Valley during Valley Division competition. Ally Giampapa finished with 16 points for the Hawks. Kaitlin Brohan contributed 7 points, 5 steals, and 3 assists for Bartlett, while Lauren Janczak (8 points) and Elizabeth Arco (7) also played well. Burlington Central 71, North Boone 39: Samantha Pryor led the Rockets (19-4, 10-0) with 27 points, as Burlington Central clinched at least a tie for its second straight Big Northern East title. Shelby Holt had 11 points, while Alison Colby and Kayla Ross scored 9 points apiece for BC. Francis Parker 46, Elgin Academy 43: Susie Cain had a career-high 20 points as well as 11 rebounds and 3 steals as the Hilltoppers (4-14) fell just short in the Independent School League. Liz Huerta had a season-high 8 points for Elgin Academy.

    Wheaton Academy’s football players made their kindergarten teachers proud Saturday afternoon.The Warriors shared the scoring load, spreading their 8 touchdowns among six players in a 56-0 victory at Guerin in River Grove.

     
  • Gudino, St. Edward stop Guerin Jan 13, 2012 10:57 PM
    St. Edward boys basketball coach P.J. White would like to see Troy Gudino play a lot more like he did in the second quarter Friday night. Gudino scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second quarter as the rest of the Green Wave struggled from the field. He also hit a key bucket late in the fourth quarter as St. Edward held off Guerin for a 57-48 Suburban Christian Blue victory in Elgin.

    Kali Kossakowski and Maddie Kerr each had 2 doubles as St. Edward’s softball team won for the third straight game and sixth time in the last seven games Monday, downing Guerin Prep 8-3 in a Suburban Christian Blue game at the Elgin Sports Complex. Kerr was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, Kossakowski drove in a run, Kelsey Richmond had an RBI and Veronica Rolando had a double and an RBI for the Green Wave (6-7, 4-2). Tarah McShane also drove in a run. Sarah Field was the winning pitcher, striking out four with 1 walk. She allowed 8 hits. CL South 8, Jacobs 4: Liz Adams was 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI to lead the Gators (9-5, 2-3) to a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win. Rachel Lief (2-for-4, 2 RBI) also contributed to South’s offense. Sam Golf (5-0) picked up the win, striking out five and allowing 5 hits. Alyssa Lach (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Kelsey Peterson (2-for-4, 2B), Kara Arceneaux (RBI, 2 SBs) and Jenna Teson (2 SBs) led the Golden Eagles (7-7. 3-2). Marissa Lombardo suffered the loss. Cary-Grove 14, Huntley 4: Lisa Semro had 3 hits including a 3-run home run and 4 RBI and Emma Gaulke added a home run to lead the Trojans (14-1, 5-0) to a Fox Valley Valley Division win. Sara Markelonis (3-for-4, 2 doubles), Taylor Dunne (3-for-5, 2B) and Sarah Leudo (3-for-4, 2B) also contributed for Cary-Grove. Lindsay Efflandt (12-1) struck out 10 and walked two while allowing 5 hits for the win. Randi Peterson (2-for-3, Hr, 2 RBI), Angela Tribuzio (HR, 2 RBI) and Kathery Hackett (2B) led the Red Raiders (5-9, 2-2). Taylor Larson was the losing pitcher. Batavia 15, Larkin 0: Megan Johnson had a double for Larkin (7-12, 1-5) in this Upstate Eight loss. Kiernan Schock was the losing pitcher.

    Poms, flag teams and dancers from more than 100 high schools throughout Illinois are converging on the Peoria Civic Center today for one of prep sports' most colorful state championships. But if you think “best in poms” means a traditional halftime routine, think again. Just the name of the sanctioning organization — TeamDance Illinois — reflects the trend. In all, more than 2,000 students will be competing, as they showcase the best dance, flag and poms routines from throughout the state.
