    Following Friday night's 42-7 playoff-opening win over Glenbrook South, Schaumburg looks locked. And loaded. The Saxons dedicated themselves to improvement and focus after last week's regular-season thrashing from Palatine, and it showed at home against the visiting Titans, who finished 5-5. Schaumburg scored on four consecutive possessions in the first half in zipping to a 29-0 halftime lead, limiting Glenbrook South to 30 yards total offense while rolling up 236 in the first two quarters.

    The 45th annual Chicagoland Marching Band Festival was held Saturday at Wheeling High School, with 28 of the area's top high school marching bands performing and vying for awards. Prospect High School was named Grand Champion for its show, "To the Moon and Back," which also got them the grand champion trophy at the Lancer Joust a week before.

    Devin O'Hara didn't show any problems making the switch from wide receiver to quarterback. The senior rushed for 6 touchdowns and threw for another as Prospect came back from a 15-point halftime deficit to beat Glenbrook South 55-41.

    It was a case of oh-so-close Tuesday night for Neuqua Valley High School product Kevin Cordes, who finished third in the breaststroke in 1:00.58. The NCAA record holder, now attending Arizona, was out in front at the halfway point at the U.S. Olympic trials. "I knew if I wanted to win I had to start out fast and maintain that lead," Cordes said. "Unfortunately it just didn't work out."

    With the chance to avenge an early exit from last year's playoffs in an upset loss to Buffalo Grove, Glenbrook South seized the opportunity. The Titans (20-4-4) struck back with two first-half goals after the Bison had stunned the favored veteran Central Suburban League club with a 13th-minute goal from Colleen Zickert. Fifth-seeded Glenbrook South then held off the No. 2 seed the rest of the way to earn a 2-1 victory Friday night in Class 3A sectional championship play at Palatine. The Titans will meet New Trier in Tuesday's Niles North supersectional.

    Fifth-seeded Glenbrook South and superb striker April Cronin broke the hearts of the Palatine girls soccer faithful Tuesday evening as the Titans overwhelmed the sectional hosts 6-2 to end the season for the No. 13 Pirates (14-9-2), who were hosting semifinal action at Chic Anderson Stadium. Cronin struck three times before 20 minutes had elapsed, and she put the finishing touches on a brilliant offensive show at 53 minutes to give the Titans (19-4-4) their 13th consecutive victory and a place in Friday's sectional final with No. 2 Buffalo Grove.

  • Big win for Schaumburg’s Lin May 19, 2012 6:38 PM
    Schaumburg freshman Vincent Lin booked his place in the upcoming boys tennis state tournament by delivering a 3-set victory over Glenbrook South sophomore Ben Hoogland 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to capture the Schaumburg sectional singles title Saturday. Lin also helped lead his team to an impressive third-place finish in the team race behind perenial powers Glenbrook South and North. The Titans, behind the superb doubles team of Michael Sellitto and Michael Levin and its No. 2 team of Luke McCanna and Will Lyon, outscored its Central Suburba League rival Glenbrook North 25-19 to win the team battle. The Saxons finished with 18 points, 4 more than Conant. Barrington, which qualified its No. 1 doubles team (George Coll-Varun Parekh), finished fifth overall with 12 overall points.

    Trying to hold at bay a team like Glenbrook South that has been on a roll for the last half of the season was something Carmel's girls soccer team wanted to do Saturday morning. And for the most part, the Corsairs battled fiercely with the Titans for a full 80 minutes. But fourth-seeded Carmel couldn't get past No. 5 Glenbrook South as the Titans claimed a 2-0 victory in a Class 3A regional final in Glenview.

But on Tuesday, 12th-seeded Warren ran into another team with similar beliefs, as fifth-seeded Glenbrook South shut out the Blue Devils 4-0 in a Class 3A regional semifinal. The Titans (17-4-4) next host fourth-seeded Carmel (14-3-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday in the regional championship round at Glenbrook South.

Top singles seed Jason Brown advanced into todays semifinals at host Hersey, but only after Stevensons Jeremy Bush took 8 games from the Deerfield star in a 6-4, 6-4 match which was played at Prospect High School. The Patriots will begin todays competition in third place with 28 points, 4 behind Hinsdale Central. The Red Devils are chasing tournament leader and reigning state champ New Trier.

    Dozens of Libertyville High School students swam, biked and ran Thursday in a mini-triathlon that's a final exam of sorts for a fitness class. "We wanted to teach them how to set goals for themselves ... and we also wanted to do something different, to challenge the kids a little differently than any other course in the school," Total Body Fitness teacher Carrie Niemet said.

    Note the k in the not-so-traditional spelling of Carmel Catholic pitcher Erika Schoenfelds first name. Its fitting. While the junior doesnt necessarily ring up plenty of Ks, she does throw plenty of strikes. Take a two-strike pitch from Schoenfeld and be prepared to be rung up. Shes just a strike machine, Carmel coach Jason Raymond said of Schoenfeld, after her complete-game shutout led the Corsairs to a 2-0 win over Glenbrook South in the second game of the day for each team at Carmel on Saturday.

    Junior catcher Sam Belletini's 3-run homer in the top of the seventh against host Carmel Catholic on Saturday highlighted a 4-run rally, as Warren stunned Carmel 8-6 in the first of three games in Mundelein. Glenbrook South edged Warren 2-1 in the middle game of the day.

    In a crucial no-ad point in a singles semifinal at Saturdays Liberty Bell boys tennis invite at Glenbrook North, Vernon Hills junior Ismail Kadyrov did everything right. The Cougar was up 5-4 on Warren junior Kristiyan Trukov at the time. But Kadyrovs reward for hitting stellar shots in the highly competitive exchange was a point for Trukov. The Blue Devil had come up with a resounding winner on game point. Trukov then won the next two games to take the first set 7-5. Ismail was able to forget about that first set and focus all of his attention on the second set, VH coach Doug Gerber would say later. Kadyrov claimed the second set 6-3, after trailing 3-1, and advanced to the final with a 10-7 decision in the super tiebreaker.
