    Maine West basketball coach John Bongiorno’s Warriors had not played all that badly while starting the season 1-3 after the Thanksgiving tournament they hosted. “I stressed three things in the locker room before the game,” said Bongiorno. “Rebounding, turnovers, and getting a majority share in the 50-50 loose balls.” None of those three elements ended up favoring Maine West in a 50-35 loss to Glenbrook South in a Central Suburban crossover in Des Plaines on Tuesday night.

    Derek Parola noted, with a smile, that he’s been around Mundelein baseball “too much” during his life. So following the Mustangs’ 9-3 win over host Glenbrook South in a Class 4A sectional semifinal in Glenview on Thursday, the senior and son of Mundelein coach Todd Parola was confident in his assessment of Saturday’s sectional final. No. 3 Mundelein (34-2) will play — oh, yes — top-seeded Libertyville (33-5) at 10 a.m. The rivals split during North Suburban Lake Division action, with the visitor winning each time. Libertyville pulled out a 3-1 victory, before Mundelein won 8-6 the following day.

    After four seasons of playing a vampire on Syfy's "Being Human, Sam Witwer, a 36-year-old Glenview native, is now eyeing other TV acting roles and possibly movie producing. But he looks back fondly on the popular sci-fi show, especially the last season. “We did go with a happy ending, which I think was deserved after torturing those characters for years,” Witwer said. “It went out the best way it possibly could.”

    After Jimmy Govern led off Libertyville’s nonconference baseball game at Glenbrook South by reaching on an error, Conor Simpson took the first pitch for a strike. Then came thunder. Not off Simpson’s bat, mind you. Stormy weather forced both teams to take cover. When Saturday’s game resumed — 2½ hours later — Simpson stepped into the box again. Then came more noise — off Simpson’s bat. The senior smashed a base hit. Two batters later, Matt Reed singled both Govern and Simpson in, and Libertyville was on its way to a 9-8 win in Glenview.

    Prospect’s girls basketball team was not all that thrilled with its play on Saturday at the 24th annual McDonald’s Shootout in Villa Park. “That loss to Wheaton Warrenville South (61-46) left kind of a sour taste,” said Knights coach Ashley Graham. So the taste of victory felt good on Tuesday in Glenview. Junior Taylor Will scored a game-high 18 points and classmate Catherine Sherwood added 16 as Prospect (17-4) topped host Glenbrook South 40-38 in the nonconference girls basketball game.

    The powerful one-two punch of Cody Hauser and Alex Jacobs were at the heart of a pin frenzy by Fremd on Thursday night as the Vikings claimed a 40-30 victory over visiting Glenbrook South in nonconference wrestling action. The pair jump-started the Vikings during the early stages, with Hauser (16-2) recording a fall at 1:07 before the Jacobs (18-1), a sophomore, needed one second more to put away Ali Shegarfi to put the hosts up for good at 13-9.

    A flexible finish from Prospect’s Danny Thomas helped contort the Knights into the semifinals of the Wheeling Hardwood Classic. Thomas took a feed from teammate Bobby Frasco at the top of the key with 5 seconds to play, then weaved past two Glenbrook South defenders and laid the ball into the basket with 2.2 seconds left to lift his team to a 52-51 decision in championship quarterfinal play Thursday.

    Like it has been all season, the offensive balance of Hersey’s girls basketball team was clearly in operation Saturday afternoon at the Ken Carter Gymnasium. Playing their tenth game, the Huskies produced a fifth different player to lead the team in points. This time, it was Renee Poulos. The senior forward tossed in 13 points as the Huskies rolled to their ninth win against one loss with a 55-32 triumph over visiting Glenbrook South.

    Glenbrook South’s girls basketball team started slowly this season, as the Titans they lost all five of their games in Schaumburg’s Thanksgiving tournament. They’re turning it around, however, and Libertyville was the victim Saturday. Glenbrook South won its second game in a row, defeating visiting Libertyville 51-34 in nonconference action.

    Warren has been in situations just liked this before. Down 17-7, start of the fourth quarter, and on the road? Yep, got ’em right where we want ’em. The tenth-seeded Blue Devils were in deep against the seventh seed, host Glenbrook South, in a Class 8A playoff opener in Glenview. But that all changed in just over 60 seconds. A 3-play, 84-yard drive got Warren within 17-14 — and the Blue Devils were just getting started, as 23 unanswered fourth quarter points and a school record-setting effort by senior quarterback Andrew Nickell lifted Warren to its first road playoff win since 2001 in a 33-17 decision Saturday night.

    Peter Campbell denied Prospect a perfect homecoming weekend start with a 58th-minute strike to help put visiting Glenbrook South ahead for good Friday afternoon in a nonconference soccer match in Mt. Prospect. The Titans captain drove his close-range angled shot off the gloves of keeper Jack Cooney, who made a valiant attempt to turn around the game-winner in a 2-1 decision.

But I always thought, 'What am I going to do with animals, my passion?'” said Cleary.
