  • Downers Grove North bats unstoppable Apr 29, 2013 12:00 AM
The plate approaches by Downers Grove North's baseball team may have differed, but they all worked. The Trojans did a little bit of everything offensively in Monday's 20-0 West Suburban Silver Conference victory over Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn.

New guy, old result for Lake Park Apr 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Just what Lake Park needs. Another guy. On the biggest stage of his outdoor track season thus far, Lancers first-year hurdler Antonio Shenault won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles at the 34th annual Jim Arnold Invite at Glenbard West. Shenault, a starting cornerback for the Lancers football team last fall, sliced a half-second off his prior best to beat teammate Scott Filip in the 110s at 14.50 seconds and won the 300 by more than a second at 40.25. "Last year I was just a sprinter, so I thought I'd try new things and hurdling was the first thing I tried. It clearly worked," he said

  • Teso Coker of Wheaton Warrenville south just clears the bar at 5.1 during the Wheaton Warrenville South girls track meet Friday.

Big meet, big results Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Possibly the only thing more impressive than Wheaton Warrenville South's team victory at the 36th annual Tiger Invitational on Friday was Glenbard West junior Madeline Perez's time in the 3,200-meter run. The Tigers won their own girls track meet for a third consecutive year, racking up 130.5 points to easily defeat second-place St. Ignatius, which scored 63. "It was real exciting," said Tigers senior co-captain Jessica Spera. "Our team, we push each other really hard in practices. We just come out here and each do our best, so it's really awesome." "It's a fun meet, and for us to do as well as we did with the quality of the teams, I mean St. Ignatius, nobody knows about a St. Ignatius," said Tigers coach Rob Harvey. "They're unbelievable. Glenbard West is a great team."

Glenbard West reigns Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Emma Gambol was not about to leave Benedictine University with three runner-up performances Saturday afternoon in Lisle. The Glenbard West sophomore, after razor-thin defeats in the 100-meter dash and 300 hurdles, not to mention a third-place finish in the triple jump, had a comfortable lead on the anchor leg of the 1,600 relay. Gambol proceeded to lengthen the Hilltoppers’ lead over Whitney Young to cement their third consecutive team championship of the Sue Pariseau girls track and field invitational. Gambol, with support from Emma Reifel, Mary Nevins and Emma Winans, catapulted the Hilltoppers’ quartet to victory in 4:03.19 as the last event of the 15-team invitational was emblematic of the final team score.

  • Lake Park sweeps Neuqua Valley Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
To win the Upstate Eight Valley Conference baseball title, you have to get through Neuqua Valley. That’s exactly what Lake Park did on Saturday. Behind standout pitching performances from Christian Taugner and Mark Pall, the Lancers (11-2, 7-1) swept a key doubleheader against the Wildcats (9-5, 6-2) in Naperville. The three-game series concludes Tuesday in Roselle.

  • Glenbard West can’t rally against Heflin, Downers North Apr 15, 2013 12:00 AM
It is almost unfair to spot Elaine Heflin 3 runs. It happened Monday at Glenbard West, and Downers Grove North's senior fireballer did the rest. Heflin struck out 18 Hilltoppers in a 3-hitter, the No. 7-ranked Trojans rolling 5-0 in the West Suburban Silver opener at rainy Memorial Park.

  • Sansone, Heller lead the way in Wheaton co-op victory Apr 13, 2013 12:00 AM
The Wheaton co-op boys gymnastics has had a great deal of success this season. It hasn't necessarily come easily, though, as Wheaton has had to overcome its share adversity throughout the spring. The was the case Saturday's in the 14-team Donaldson Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville South. Despite being without leading all-arounder David MacDonald and key specialist Connor Ritchie, Wheaton was able to hold off Glenbrook North 148.675 to 147.525 for the title. Junior Ethan Sansone led the team by taking third in the all-around with a 51.9.

West Aurora makes its case at Downers Grove North Apr 12, 2013 12:00 AM
The West Aurora girls track and field team had a glaring omission from its trophy case in recent years. Despite a host of prestigious titles, including three county championships, a pair of DuPage Valley Conference titles and an equal number of sectional triumphs in Class 3A the last three years, the Ritter Invite at Downers Grove North had proven mightily elusive with three straight runner-up performances. But behind the indomitable talents of Emma Spagnola and Anita Saffra Friday night in Downers Grove, the Blackhawks eased past field-event heavy Prospect 119-105 to win the 14-team invitational.
