    A private room at Cooper’s Corner in Winfield was filled Friday afternoon with guests attending a big birthday party. The celebration wasn’t just for one person though — it was for more than two dozen graduates of Glenbard West High School’s class of 1952, who are all turning, or have already turned, 80 this year. “We have a good camaraderie in our class,” said John Tobey of Lombard, one of the former Hilltoppers who helped organize the event. “It’s neat to keep up with their goings and their comings.”

But the Hawks’ hit parade kept up well after Nowak’s two-run home run in the second inning, and Bartlett went on to a 7-0 win and a date against Upstate Eight Conference rival and No. 4 seed St. Charles North for the regional title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

    For a two-time defending state champion, a 4-run deficit in the second inning is not something to get too excited about. Glenbard South found itself trailing 4-0 under the lights at Glenbard West Friday night, but a towering home run in the fourth inning followed by a 6-run fifth inning powered the Raiders to an 8-4 win over the Hilltoppers and sends the Class 3A champs into the postseason on a high note.

    Marcus Jegede, a key to Lake Park’s shot at an unprecedented fifth straight boys state track championship, got maximum results from minimum effort. He had little choice. At Friday’s Class 3A Lake Park boys sectional in Roselle, Jegede was on a crash diet of one jump per event to save a testy hamstring that had allowed him to long jump at only two meets this spring, and no triple jumps.
