Grace Watson puts it best when she says, “I am very proud to say that I have found a way to make some type of difference as a teen.” That’s what volunteering has allowed the senior at Naperville Central High School to accomplish. Watson and other members of the 2014-15 Daily Herald Leadership Team all found ways to make a difference in their communities. We’d like you to meet the members of the DuPage team — winners and honorable mentions.

  • Glenbard West gives St. Charles East a scare Jan 7, 2015 12:00 AM
One sign of a good team is winning without its best stuff. When St. Charles East deadeye guard Cole Gentry goes 2 of 5 from the free-throw line it’s an off night. Perhaps it was the 10-day layoff, the Tuesday nonconference game, but host Glenbard West had that layoff, too.

  • Down the stretch, it’s Glenbard West Dec 20, 2014 12:46 AM
For a change, Glenbard West’s boys basketball team surged to a double-digit second-half lead on Friday. The key at that point was keeping it. The Hilltoppers did just that, holding off Downers Grove North in a 69-56 West Suburban Silver Conference victory in Glen Ellyn.

  • Rugamba basket at buzzer lifts Naperville Central Dec 6, 2014 11:02 PM
This weekend was a doubleheader for the Naperville Central boys basketball team. On Friday night it was the DuPage Valley Conference opener, an 18-point victory over Glenbard North. Just 24 hours later, the Redhawks returned to their home court for a nonconference battle against Glenbard West. There’s not much of a rivalry. The game might have some influence in postseason seedings. It had the makings of a game that might cause indifference.

  • Jacobs flexes muscles at mega quad Dec 6, 2014 9:55 PM
When he was a freshman, Cody Ferencz endured a 7-win season — with the prospects of ever reaching double-digit victories in his career at Jacobs looking dim. After sweeping all three duals Saturday at Glenbard West, Ferencz and his teammates have propelled the Golden Eagles’ overall record to a dazzling 7-0 — and the prospects are looking up for even bigger and better things. The Eagles had far too much firepower for Bartlett, Joliet West and the host and were the best of the five clubs competing at the annual Hilltopper Mega Quad in Glen Ellyn, setting up an important Fox Valley Conference dual meet Thursday at McHenry. The Hilltoppers went 2-2, while Joilet West ended 2-1. Hersey, with heavyweight and 2014 state qualifier Tyler Cooke sidelined by the flu, finished 1-2. A shorthanded Bartlett was 0-3.

Stevenson reeled off 13 unanswered points to open the fourth quarter and never looked back en route to a 61-42 victory over the Hilltoppers at Hinsdale Central for the tourney title.

  • ‘So close’ goes Stevenson’s way Nov 22, 2014 10:04 PM
When the football hit Jimmy Marchese in the hands, he quickly pulled it to his body and gently went to the ground. Marchese risked nothing to make sure “so close” finally went Stevenson’s way. The senior linebacker’s interception in the end zone with under five seconds to play sealed the Patriots’ 7-3 victory over Glenbard West in Saturday’s Class 8A semifinals in Glen Ellyn, a win that sends Stevenson to the state title game for the second time overall and for the first time since 2002.
