If the IHSA ever decides to add a free-throw shooting contest to its state tournament, count Alex Silverman and St. Charles North ready. Silverman hit the go-ahead 3-pointer, then she and the rest of the No. 17 seed North Stars salted away the game by hitting 16 of 22 free throws in the fourth quarter to beat No. 16 Glenbard West 52-45 in Monday's first-round action of the Class 4A Wheaton Warrenville South regional.

Defending champion Metea Valley (15-8, 8-2) hopes 5-17 South Elgin — which Neuqua (22-2, 10-1 UEC Valley) beat 71-32 on Dec. 15 — can pull off the upset and the Mustangs can beat Waubonsie Valley and Bartlett to force a first-place tie.

Glenbard West wins despite off day Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
The sign of a good team is winning when you don’t play your best. Glenbard West’s boys basketball team hopes that was the case Tuesday night. Wheaton Warrenville South dictated the pace, but visiting Glenbard West still managed to emerge from the nonconference matchup with a 53-49 victory on Tuesday.

St. Charles co-op edges Glenbard West, Geneva Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Glenbard West, Geneva and St. Charles co-op had so many great performances last week in regional competition that it made Tuesday’s Glenbard West sectional a must-see event for girls gymnastics fans. The Vikings have never advanced to state in their young 13-year history. Meanwhile, St. Charles co-op had earned just a single trip in the past 12 years. The Hilltoppers and Vikings still might celebrate, but they won’t know if they have a reason to until around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. As for St. Charles, it started to party when it was awarded a sectional plaque after a thrilling victory.

The finals are set, and lots of suburban high schools will compete for the IHSA state cheerleading championships on Saturday in Bloomington. Perennial coed powerhouse Buffalo Grove High School led all scorers Friday, finishing with 91.72 points out of a possible 100.

Cheerleading squads from all over Illinois converge on Bloomington Friday as the 2013 IHSA's competitive cheerleading state championships open. The suburbs are well represented in the 100 schools that made the championships. "We're so excited," said Conant cheerleading coach Dana Muszynski. "We're a young team, but they're very determined and driven." Only the top 10 in each of the three divisions return to compete on Saturday for the state titles.

Soane leads Glenbard West past Downers North Jan 30, 2013 12:00 AM
Caitlin Soane scored 16 points, and the Hilltoppers (8-15, 3-8 West Suburban Silver) outscored the Trojans 14-6 in the fourth quarter to rally in Downers Grove. Sarah Costello scored 18 points and Peyton Winters 12 for Downers North.

A couple of Nathan Marcus’ future football coaches at Vanderbilt University came to watch the all-state tight end play basketball at Stevenson on Tuesday night. Another dandy was on display for Vandy, too. Matt Morrissey, an all-state football player himself, and his Stevenson teammates prevailed in an appropriately physical battle. The Patriots received a game-high 21 points and 8 rebounds from sophomore point guard Jalen Brunson in a 61-47 nonconference win that stretched their winning streak to six games.

With each day that passes by, Glenbard West’s boys basketball players become more comfortable with each other on the court. That’s bad news for opponents. The Hilltoppers, playing at full strength for one of the few times this season, wrapped up a season sweep of Lyons Twp. with a 65-49 West Suburban Silver Conference victory Thursday in Glen Ellyn.
