  • Cattenhead a hit for Glenbard South May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
    To say Ashton Cattenhead has been a pleasant surprise for Glenbard South only tells half the story. It was a surprise she's even here. Cattenhead played for Glenbard South's freshman team two years ago, then moved to Huntley her sophomore year. Julie Fonda, the Raiders softball coach, didn't realize Cattenhead was back until she bumped into her in the hallway last fall.

    Julie Fonda has fond memories of Glenbard South's last meeting with Marengo prior to Friday. It came last June, Fonda's Raiders beating the Indians 2-1 in the Class 3A title game. "Today was another happy moment," Fonda said. "I'll take this one as well." Fonda is no doubt feeling good about her No. 7 Raiders, who took care of Marengo 6-1 on a frigid Friday evening at the The Ballpark in Rosemont.

    With 17 seniors on his team, Glenbard South coach Mark Tacchi knows the Raiders might struggle a little next year. But he's enjoying this group too much to worry about that. The Raiders won their fourth consecutive Class 2A sectional, scoring 149 points to run away with the team title Friday in Glen Ellyn.

    Markovic taking her game to next level May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
    Nevena Markovic was born in Serbia, bred on basketball. Her dad, Zoran, played professionally in Serbia. At a young age he introduced his daughter to the game. As a child, she looked up to stars like ex-Los Angeles Laker Vlade Divac on the Serbian national team. "It was my childhood dream to play for the national team," Markovic said. "I always thought it was something I would love to do." She is about to realize that opportunity.

  • With Abello out, pressure on Benet May 6, 2013 12:00 AM
    Benet is about to play a game of musical chairs no softball team wishes for. That's after sophomore catcher Stephanie Abello hurt her wrist Saturday at Marian Catholic when she banged into a fence chasing a pop-up. A trainer on site thought the wrist could be broken, but X-rays that evening came back negative. Abello will likely go for an MRI Tuesday.
