    Sydney Benz had one final game leadoff at-bat for Glenbard North. “You can’t start a game with a strikeout, a groundout,” Benz said. “It’s too emotionally draining.” Benz opened the Panthers’ third-place Class 4A softball game against Lincoln-Way East with a double to right center. Juniors Stephanie Campos and Sarah Petzold followed with solid basehits as Glenbard North scored early and never looked back in its 6-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Eastside Centre.

Glenbard North (30-6) faces the Griffins (27-11) for the consolation championship.

Then a Panthers sophomore baseball coach, Sanew expected the interview to take an hour. He felt dejected it ended in a quarter of that time. “I left there thinking, 15 minutes, I really messed this one up,” Sanew recalled.

But for the first time in three years, the senior second baseman did not have a broken heart after playing in a Class 4A sectional championship game. Caliva and the top-seeded Panthers turned the tables from the past two years when they lost 1-run games. This time, it was Caliva’s game-winning double to left that scored Stephanie Campos with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory over No. 2 Conant (26-6) at Bartlett High School.

Best friends and battery mates Cory Wright and Kyle Khoury did the heavy lifting and worked overtime to ensure that became a reality for the North Stars.

    Known for much of the season for its second-half displays, Geneva’s girls soccer team changed its approach for Saturday’s regional title match with Glenbard North at Burgess Field. The Vikings moved forward from the opening whistle and tried to put the Panthers under pressure. The shift in emphasis paid dividends when Courtney Lardas scored in the sixth minute of the match and as Geneva moved toward what ended as a 4-2 victory.
