Productive day for Glenbard N. at Maine EastFeb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Heading to Champaign next weekend? Your probabilities of running into a few young men with bleached blonde hair are looking strong. And when you do, you will have found Glenbard North's 7 state-qualified wrestlers, all hoping for individual state titles and traditionally wearing the hairdos. Success for the Panthers came easy at the Class 3A Maine East sectional Saturday afternoon as Jon Marmolego (120 pounds), Jered Cortez (126) and Brian Murphy (152) all grabbed first-place wins in their respective weight classes, while Jimique Davis at 160 took second place, Patrick Augstyn (106) and Johnny Gosinski (132) placed third and Colton Wegner (170) sneaked into Champaign in fourth place. “We brought 10 guys here, seven got out and I can remember when we'd be happy if we got one guy out,” said Panthers' coach Mark Hahn. “To get seven guys out that's pretty good. We had five in the finals, pretty good tournament, all the way around.”

Schaumburg overcomes obstacles, Glenbard North Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
There was a lot working against Schaumburg on Tuesday night. The host Saxons were facing an athletic Glenbard North squad that likes to trap and use their speed to force turnovers. And to further complicate matters, the Saxons were playing without three-year starter Kyle Bolger, who was sitting out with an undisclosed injury. But through it all, Schaumburg maintained its composure, overcame an outstanding individual performance from the Panthers’ Chip Flanigan and converted at the free throw line in the final minute to pull out a 61-55 nonconference victory.

St. Charles co-op edges Glenbard West, Geneva Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Glenbard West, Geneva and St. Charles co-op had so many great performances last week in regional competition that it made Tuesday’s Glenbard West sectional a must-see event for girls gymnastics fans. The Vikings have never advanced to state in their young 13-year history. Meanwhile, St. Charles co-op had earned just a single trip in the past 12 years. The Hilltoppers and Vikings still might celebrate, but they won’t know if they have a reason to until around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. As for St. Charles, it started to party when it was awarded a sectional plaque after a thrilling victory.

Key efforts lift Glenbard North at Lockport Jan 12, 2013 12:00 AM
The latest work from both Jared Cortez and Brian Murphy has been nothing short of remarkable, so it figures a little magic from the top-rated wrestlers at 126 and 152 pounds would inspire Glenbard North in its tournament finale as the Panthers used a late burst to defeat mega-dual host Lockport 41-27 to end Saturday with a 4-0 record. The Panthers used their superior lower-weight strength to outscore the Porters 19-4 over the last six bouts to earn a thrilling victory after a long day of competition against a cast of state ranked teams, including some of the best in area. Neuqua Valley and Metea Valley both went 2-1 overall, while reigning Mid-Suburban League champion Barrington went 1-2 after a controversial call led to a heart-breaking 34-28 defeat to the Porters. Geneva dropped all three of its matches, including its last of the day to Metea Valley 34-32.

Even with Chip Flanigan, Glenbard North’s boys basketball team faced a stiff challenge guarding 6-foot-7 Hinsdale Central sophomore Matt Rafferty. With Flanigan riding the bench due to foul trouble, it became almost impossible to match Rafferty in the post. The Red Devils took advantage of Rafferty’s strength inside while rolling to a 66-46 victory over Glenbard North in Saturday’s Downers North Winter Classic. The talented sophomore scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Hinsdale Central (9-5) dominated the final three quarters.

Larkin dumps Glenbard North Dec 27, 2012 12:00 AM
Trailing Glenbard North by 12 points in the fourth quarter with a 6-game winning streak in jeopardy, the Larkin boys basketball team remained calm and confident. “We were talking to each other and we knew it wasn’t over,” Larkin senior guard Quantice Hunter said. “I think because of our conditioning in practice we’re able to wear out teams at the end.” The Royals indeed dominated the final six minutes of a 74-67 victory at the 38th Annual Annual Elgin Holiday Tournament Thursday to extend their streak to 7.
