    Glenbard High School District 87 is planning $100 million worth of facility improvements at its four schools, a portion of which will likely require voter approval. The building improvements include classroom renovations and additions, adding air conditioning to remaining areas at Glenbard East and West, and other mechanical work. The projects would take 10 years to complete and are proposed to be funded with a combination of annual district operations funds and proceeds from bond sales and extensions.

    Educational and instructional aides, secretaries, library clerks, technology specialists and other support staff members at the four Glenbard District 87 high schools will have a new three-year contract starting this summer that includes annual raises of about 3 percent each year. But the new agreement, approved unanimously by the school board this week, also allows some who announce plans to retire within the next three years to get 5.5 percent salary boosts each year that would allow future retirees to pad their retirements.

    The graduation ceremony planned for Friday evening at Glenbard East High School in Lombard has been postponed due to the forecast for inclement weather, school district officials said. The ceremony will take place at noon Saturday, and officials will decide by 10 a.m. whether the ceremony will be held indoors or outdoors.

    A Glen Ellyn park originally used as a space to honor those who've died in military service will return to that purpose as a part of a $95,000 landscaping and memorial plan made possible by an anonymous donor. Spalding Point, the parcel of land directly west of Memorial Field that extends to the corner of Crescent and Park boulevards, will be undergoing a beautification project this fall that organizers hope will create a welcoming public space and add reverence to an existing Civil War memorial stone and four memorial trees planted to honor Glen Ellyn residents who died in the Vietnam War.

    A Lombard teen who was expelled for taking a 30-inch "clublike object" to Glenbard South High School has avoided a felony conviction. Steven Allen, 17, pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge of misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon. He was sentenced to a year of conditional discharge, 100 hours of community service and a tour of the DuPage County jail, according to an agreement with prosecutors.

    Glenbard High School District 87 officials have selected the next principal of Glenbard South. Sandra Coughlin, currently assistant principal for instruction at Glenbard East, has been chosen for the principal role at South. She will replace Terri Hanrahan, who will become the school district's teaching and learning coordinator and Title I facilitator effective July 1.

    A deal with a firm to facilitate placement of advertising on scoreboards at Glenbard District 87 high schools fell through, school district officials said. A change in the company's leadership structure may have closed the door on the deal. Blake Brickman, who became iHigh's chief operating officer, said the company isn't in the business of selling scoreboard ads, and the deal negotiated with Glenbard officials was unique.

    Glenbard High School District 87 plans to adjust its school day schedule starting in the fall that officials say would allow students struggling academically to get extra help. Those students would be able to get additional academic support during an extended lunch period that is proposed to be implemented at all four district high schools.
