    Bartlett’s 10-point lead nearly evaporated in 70 seconds when faced with Glenbard East rainmakers, but the Hawks didn’t lose their grip in Friday’s 56-50 win. It seemed as though Bartlett had an Upstate Eight Valley boys basketball win all but locked up when senior Jordan Anderson drove from the left elbow, threw down a left-handed dunk over a defender and drew the foul. The three-point play staked his team to a 49-39 lead with 1:39 left.

    Midway through the third quarter it looked like Wheaton Warrenville South’s boys basketball players might be able to get some needed rest on a busy Saturday afternoon. It didn’t quite work out that way despite a 27-point lead at one point, but the Tigers still beat Glenbard East 57-44 to advance to the second round of the third annual Martin Luther King tournament at WW South. Behind a 26-point effort from Josh Ruggles, the Tigers (7-8) moved on to play Notre Dame in Saturday night’s quarterfinals. WW South pulled off a big upset in that one by beating the Dons 61-56 behind Ruggles’ 27 points. The Tigers (8-8) advance to face York (10-6), which beat Marmion and Waukegan, in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

    Glenbard East senior Bryce Roberts had several contested shots that just wouldn’t go in the fourth quarter. Then came the easy one that beat Metea Valley. Then came the easy one that beat Metea Valley. Out of a timeout taken by Rams coach Scott Miller with nine seconds left, Michael Finley drove into the lane, drawing Mustangs defenders. Finley passed to Roberts alone near the basket and the lanky forward banked it in with four seconds to play. Metea Valley guard Bryson Oliver’s 15-foot leaner bounced off the backboard and Glenbard East claimed the 42-41 Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division victory Friday in Lombard.

    Glenbard East High School Band Director Tara Cappelletti has been selected as the Veterans of Foreign Wars High School Teacher of the Year for Lombard VFW Lilac Post 5815 and received the VFW 19th District Teacher of the Year Award. The 19th District area consists of area counties outside of Cook County.

  • Boundy, Smith key Barrington’s Berman triumph Dec 30, 2014 8:55 PM
    As the day drew closer to an end at the 60th annual Berman Holiday Classic, Barrington coach Dave Udchik still had a healthy respect for the strength and talent of Oak Forest. But when the Broncos’ Connor Boundy (145) and Julius Smith (160) both bumped off the the top seed during the semifinals, Smith’s coming in a head-to-head with Oak Forest standout Patrick Kristin, things took a decided turn for the better for Barrington. Those two victories, along with another in the semis from Travis Cysewski at 160, and the collective strength and depth of the Broncos’ lineup proved more than the field could handle as Barrington carried off the championship trophy with 206 overall points, 12.5 more than Oak Forest. Lincoln-Way West (147), Deerfield (144.5) and Metea Valley (133) rounded out the top five of this prestigious and diverse 31-team group.

    A flawless first round helped put Barrington’s wrestling team in good position, and the Broncos managed to hold on to that early lead throughout Day 1 of the 60th annual Berman Holiday Classic on Monday at Palatine High School. Dave Udchik’s team went 14-0 to open the state’s oldest wresting tournament before watching a big lead shrink to hard-charging Class 2A state power Oak Forest.
