  • Work beginning on third-floor renovations at Glen Ellyn library Jul 3, 2014 6:18 PM
    Work is expected to begin next week on the third floor of the Glen Ellyn Public Library as part of a roughly $1.5 million renovation project, officials said. The project is focused on redesigning parts of the facility’s second and third floors. “Basically, we wanted to redesign the space that we have to meet the needs of our community now,” Director Dawn Bussey said. “The building was opened in 1995 (and) the way people want to use libraries has changed a lot over the last several years.”

    The Glen Ellyn Public Library's summer reading program will also have a philanthropic twist this year. If the library reaches its reading goals, the Friends of the Glen Ellyn Public Library will donate enough money to help an injured or orphaned animal at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center.

     
  • Flooded Glen Ellyn Library providing curbside service Apr 24, 2013 5:30 AM
    While the Glen Ellyn Public Library remains closed due to flooding, patrons are still able to pick up books curbside at the building's front door. The library began limited curbside service this week while crews continue to clean up inside from a flood that left the building's subbasement under five feet of water and caused extensive damage to the first floor circulation department and public meeting rooms.

  • Water main leak closes Glen Ellyn library Nov 1, 2012 5:14 PM
    The Glen Ellyn Public Library is expected to reopen Friday after a nearby water main break kept it closed Thursday. Village public works crews were repairing the water main on Duane Street throughout the day after the leak was discovered Thursday morning, said Anthony McGinn, the library's marketing coordinator.

    Construction of a redesigned parking lot at the Glen Ellyn Public Library intended to improve traffic flow and make it easier for patrons to drop off books is now complete. The refurbished lot opened Wednesday — three weeks ahead of the established construction schedule, and two weeks after work crews started breaking up the old asphalt. The project was completed sooner than expected because the library's contractors included several possible rain days in the construction schedule in which work would have had to have been put on hold.

    Patrons at the St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia libraries now have a new way to reserve and renew library items: Using their phones. The LINC consortium, which contains nine suburban library systems, including those from the Tri-Cities, has launched a service that allows patrons to manage their accounts via text messages on their phones.

As much fun as it can be to troll through the stacks in search of the perfect read, itís a good bet theyíll tell you they have better and more exciting things to do. And, fact is, most libraries donít focus much effort on changing that perception. Allison Harrell believes libraries should be community gathering places for people of all ages.

    Mini-golf fans can test their skills at a unique 18-hole course inside the Glen Ellyn Public Library during the Swinging thru the Stacks event from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27. Proceeds from the event will go toward second-phase construction of a butterfly garden between the library and Illinois Prairie Path.
