  • Suburban rinks, coaches polished Gracie Gold Feb 10, 2014 4:47 AM
Gracie Gold, chasing an Olympic medal in figure skating to match her name, made her mark at suburban rinks for her jumps, her smiles and her dog, Yoshi. The 18-year-old U.S. national champion skated at area rinks for about five years. And while the music, glittery costumes and crowds make elite ice skating one of the most glamorous sports, getting to this level means spending a lot of time at the same rinks where three-year-olds stagger across the ice.

  • Are the suburbs an Olympic ice skating hub? Feb 9, 2014 11:26 AM
The Northbrook Speed Skating Club doesn’t have one or two Olympians among its alumni. It has 19. And the suburbs have ties to nearly a dozen other Olympians competing in ice sports in Sochi this week, including three suburban curlers, two bobsledders, a hockey official, a handful of skating coaches, and three local figure skaters (not including 2010 gold medalist Evan Lysacek, of Naperville, who bowed out a few weeks ago due to injury).

  • Illinois can cheer on some local Olympians Feb 7, 2014 5:30 AM
Minus the 10 Blackhawks players on Olympic rosters, here’s a look at the other Olympians on Team USA with Illinois connections.

  • Highland Park couple to see son skate in Sochi Feb 6, 2014 5:06 AM
Steve and Marla Brown are excited to watch their figure-skating son Jason compete in the Winter Olympics. But they weren't content to watch the Sochi Games at home. The Highland Park residents — and 16 relatives — are making an estimated 15-hour journey to Russia to watch him compete live. “We're still just so in shock,” Marla Brown said. “It's hard to believe we're really going to the Olympics to watch our son compete and represent our country.”

  • U.S. skating team in good shape for new event at Sochi Jan 27, 2014 5:29 PM
That was the U.S. figure skating haul, if you want to call it that, from the last Winter Olympics. Sounds about right for the Sochi Games, too, but only because of the addition of the team event. As a nation, the United States is in solid shape for the new team event. Although South Korea, Japan, Germany, China and Russia all have top contenders in the various competitions, across the board only the Americans, Canadians and perhaps the Russians are deep.

  • Friends send off Buffalo Grove-trained Olympians Jan 29, 2014 3:10 PM

  • Lysacek is Sochi-bound, only not on the ice Jan 24, 2014 7:06 PM
Evan Lysacek will be in Sochi after all. No, the Naperville native won’t be defending his gold medal after injuries curtailed his comeback last year. Instead, the Vancouver Olympic champion will be “wearing many hats” in Russia, and he might be more exhausted after these games than he was after competing four years ago.
