    Glenbard South’s boys basketball team felt stuck on 18 points for an eternity. The Raiders, though, did their best to make up for lost time. In both teams’ final regular-season tuneup before the playoffs begin next week, Glenbard South struggled early but eventually pulled away to Friday’s 65-42 Metro Suburban Conference victory over Fenton in Bensenville.

    Fenton High School students were able to say “bonjour” to one of the Chicago Wolves on Wednesday — and everybody knew what they were talking about. Alexandre Bolduc, a Montreal native and center for the Wolves, visited the Bensenville school to meet with students studying French and to participate in a question-and-answer session. Bolduc, who grew up in a dual-language household, answered questions primarily in French and occasionally in English.

    It was worth the wait for St. Viator’s girls basketball team. After its game with the host school of the Fenton tournament had twice been postponed due to extremely cold weather (Jan. 6 and Jan 20), the Lions and Bison finally played each other on Thursday night in Bensenville. St. Viator (14-3) was obviously eager to play. The Lions raced out to an 18-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 55-24 triumph which gave the Lions second place in the tournament.

    Already short-handed on the bench,Maine West has also lost leading scorer Joel Ferraren to knee tendinitis for the time being. For the Warriors, it was ‘next man up’ against visiting Fenton in nonconference play Tuesday in Des Plaines. Junior Matt Acevedo helped ignite a first-quarter run that gave Maine West a 21-12 lead, and the Warriors went on to beat the winless Bison 70-34. Rag Patel started in place of Ferraren and did a commendable job, scoring 12 points. Jamal Sherman added 10 points and Josh Redd had 9.
