  • Doroskin, Blackwell pace a Schaumburg victory Dec 23, 2014 11:59 PM
    Schaumburg’s girls basketball team recovered smartly from an opening-round loss in the Wheaton North tournament to defeat Willowbrook 47-30 on Tuesday afternoon. The Saxons held a 1-point lead at the break but gradually pulled away in the second half outscoring the Warriors 29-13. Schaumburg’s defense limited Willowbrook to 1 free throw in the third quarter. Leading the charge for the Saxons were Tatiana Doroskin (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Jada Blackwell (14 points, 7 rebounds).

     
  • Fremd wins divisional title in Arizona Dec 23, 2014 12:12 AM
    The Mid-Suburban League’s first girls basketball team to board an airplane for competition will be returning home in high spirits. Fremd won the third-place game of the Vesper Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions on Monday in Phoenix, Ariz. The Vikings (13-2) topped McClatchy High School (Ca.) 65-38.

     
  • Minorities now the new majority in many suburban schools Dec 21, 2014 7:00 AM
    There are more minority students in Illinois than their white counterparts, and more than 50 percent of students now come from low-income families. Suburban educators are adjusting to the demographic shift. Of the change and the challenge, Glenbard High School District 87 Superintendent David Larson said, “This is what’s happening in America. It’s exciting. It’s energizing, and it’s important to embrace.”

    Prospect’s perfect girls basketball season continued on Friday night as the Knights captured a 44-33 victory on the road at Wheeling. Senior Taylor Will led all scorers with 20 points while classmate Catherine Sherwood chipped in 13 and junior Nikki Matters 10.

     
  • Hadler helps Elk Grove edge Buffalo Grove Dec 20, 2014 12:42 AM
    Dan Hadler finished with a game-high 21 points to help Elk Grove improve to 2-1 in Mid-Suburban East boys basketball after a 54-50 victory over visiting Buffalo Grove on Friday. Buffalo Grove led by 1 point entering the fourth quarter before being outscored 16-11. Senior Depin Patel finished with 9 points, all on 3-pointers, for the Grenadiers. Collin Calcagno paced the Bison with 15 points and Colin Dekorski finished with 13.

     
  • Elk Grove High School performs at Clearmont Elementary Dec 18, 2014 1:05 PM
    The Elk Grove High School choir, Chamber Singers (formerly called the Town Criers), visited Clearmont Elementary for a holiday performance on Monday, Dec. 15. The Chamber Singers performed a variety of traditional holiday classics as well as a song entirely in French and a beatbox mix.

     
  • Williams, Petro spar in elite butterfly matchup Dec 18, 2014 10:58 PM
    In Round 1 of the Colin Williams-Michael Petro 100-yard butterfly showdown, give seniority the edge. Williams, an Elk Grove senior, won what is likely the first of three head-to-head matchups between two of the Mid-Suburban League’s top competitors — and perhaps the state’s — in the event on Thursday in a dual hosted by Hersey at Olympic Pool in Arlington Heights. The two were about even at the halfway point, with Williams touching in 24.65 and Petro in 24.71. But Williams had the stronger second half, finishing in 52.27 to Petro’s 53.26.

     
  • Buffalo Grove’s Savage rolls 300 game Dec 17, 2014 9:52 PM
    In 40-plus years of Mid-Suburban League girls bowling, there had been only six 300 games thrown until the gem last week by Karsyn Burgess of Wheeling put the total at 7. Now, make it 8. Buffalo Grove junior Joanne Savage stole the spotlight Wednesday, firing her first-ever 300 in the second game of her match against, of all teams, the Wildcats.

     
  • Fast finish helps Elk Grove win at Palatine Dec 16, 2014 10:45 PM
    Winning road games in the Mid-Suburban League is a difficult assignment. Elk Grove’s task was made even more daunting when it spotted host Palatine the first 10 points of the game their crossover boys basketball game Tuesday. Late in the fourth quarter, with overtime still a possibility, Elk Grove (6-2) exploded with a 10-0 run of its own, breaking open a 58-all tie and finishing with a 69-62 victory.

     
  • Fab four smashes relay record in Meadows’ victory Dec 13, 2014 8:36 PM
    The record-board rearranging continued for Rolling Meadows’ boys swimming team on Saturday. Probably the most important change didn’t have anything to do with time, but rather final placement. Never before in coach Monika Chiappetta’s 17 years had the Mustangs taken top team honors in the Wild Stallion Jamboree. But there was Rolling Meadows, 3 points ahead of defending Mid-Suburban East champ Prospect on Saturday, and well ahead of strong teams from Hersey, Cary-Grove and Lane Tech.

  • Williams, Dellorto break 500 records in Meadows’ victory Dec 13, 2014 12:08 AM
    Rolling Meadows earned its first dual victory of the boys swimming season, topping Elk Grove 136-44 on Friday in the facility both teams share at Elk Grove High School in a Mid-Suburban East dual. Both teams got to celebrate program records in the 500-yard freestyle. Elk Grove senior Colin Williams won the event in 4:53.61, erasing the mark that had existed since 1977. It’s already Williams’ second team record of the season, as he established a new benchmark the previous week in the 200 IM. The second-place finisher in the 500 free was Rolling Meadows freshman Josh Dellorto. He touched in a personal-best 5:01.14 and also broke the Mustangs’ program record.

     
  • Haas has the touch as Hersey handles Elk Grove Dec 12, 2014 10:59 PM
    About the only things Hersey senior guard Payton Haas missed Friday night was his final free throw. Haas scored a season-high 26 points and pulled down 9 of the Huskies’ 33 rebounds in a 64-50 win over Elk Grove in Arlington Heights on Friday night.

     
  • Short-handed Fremd hangs on at Conant; Barrington rolls Dec 12, 2014 12:25 AM
    Fremd’s girls basketball team overcame the absence of standout sophomore Grace Tworek on Thursday night and extended its winning streak to 16 games in the Mid-Suburban West with a 46-41 triumph at Conant. Senior Haley Gorecki led the Vikings (9-1, 3-0) with a game-high 22 points and also collected 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals while teammates Erin Lenahan and Bryana Hopkins each chipped in 8 points. Brianna Lewis handed out 4 assists with 2 steals and 6 points.

     
  • Wheeling frosh Burgess busts out a 300 Dec 10, 2014 9:05 PM
    The already boisterous atmosphere of a Mid-Suburban League girls bowling meet got an extra shot of adrenaline Wednesday night. Karsyn Burgess, a Wheeling freshman, fired the first 300 game the conference has seen since the 2010/11 season. A no-doubt-about-it final strike put Burgess in the MSL record books. “I’m really excited,” said the frosh. “I’m used to stringing strikes together, and after the ninth frame I was already pretty proud of myself. “Then came the 10th frame, and the pressure was on.”

  • Fourth straight win for Schaumburg Dec 6, 2014 11:44 PM
    After starting the season with a pair of losses, Schaumburg’s boys basketball has found the winning groove. The Saxons worked overtime on Saturday at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights before posting a 59-54 victory over Hersey. Brendan Parker (18 points), Jason Schoo (13) and Charlie Quilco (10) weer top scorers for Schaumburg (4-2). Payton Haas and Joseph Coffaro each scored 18 points to pace Hersey (3-3).

     
  • Elk Grove parlays balance, depth into victory Dec 5, 2014 11:24 PM
    Elk Grove exhibited a great deal of balance and depth in its 57-37 Mid-Suburban East victory over Rolling Meadows on Friday night. The Grenadiers shared the ball, played team defense and had five players score 7 points or more.

     
  • Rolling Meadows runs by Elk Grove Dec 6, 2014 12:42 AM
    Rolling Meadows junior guard Megan King put on a 3-point shooting clinic in the first half as the Mustangs began defense of their Mid-Suburban League East championship with a 65-49 victory at Elk Grove. King’s game-high 21 points all came in the first half from long distance as Meadows improved to 6-1 overall.
