    Schaumburg softball coach Ellen Stoddard had one message for her Saxons when they took the field for their own Class 4A regional semifinal game on Thursday. “We told them to ‘be intense and stayed relaxed’ ” she said. The Saxons took heed and were all on the same page. And the final page of the Schaumburg’s win came off the bat of freshman Paige Alt. Her second home run of her young career — and third 2-run homer of the game by the Saxons — made it 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule over No. 9 seed Elk Grove.

    Eighth-seeded Buffalo Grove rose to the task at hand in Wednesday's Highland Park regional final — and quite a task it was. The Bison were facing Stevenson, the top seed in the 23-team Antioch sectional. Behind a dominant hitting effort from senior Evan Bunnetto, the Bison more than met the challenge. Bunnetto racked up 18 kills to go with 4 blocks and 7 digs as Buffalo Grove won 25-19, 25-23.

    A familiar name in local softball circles is taking over the reins of the Oakton College softball program. Jim Goranson, the only father who has had two daughters serve as honorary captains for the Daily Herald Cook County all-area softball team, will direct the Des Plaines junior college team.

    Silver linings for Palatine 3,200 relay, Meadows’ Keller May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
    Tess Wasowicz put her best foot forward — and didn't wince. In the end, all was well in a season that wasn't always well for the Palatine star. What the senior described as a "stress reaction" in her left foot kept her from competing on the track for half the season, but the perennial state qualifier left Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium with a runner-up state medal draped over her neck after joining 3,200-meter relay teammates Kara Burton, Liz Cox and Cassidy McPherson ran strong on the season's final day, finishing second (9:12.21) in the Class 3A race behind only New Trier (9:04.86). Another state veteran, Rolling Meadows senior thrower Morgan Keller, also left Charleston happy. She finished in second place in the discus (149 feet, 7 inches).

    Ariel Valles pitched her final regular-season game on the varsity diamond where she has spent most of her high school softball career. The Maine West senior made it a game to remember by tossing a 5-0 shutout over visiting Schaumburg on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader in Des Plaines. The Saxons took Game 2 behind a 7-hitter from sophomore Shannon Felde.

     
  • Ifianayi, Sulentic win sectional races at Glenbard North May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
    An especially strong effort in the field events helped Lake Park take top team honors in the Class 3A boys track sectional hosted by Glenbard North on Friday. The Lancers finished with 147 points to top runner-up Wheaton North (105), York (103) and Conant (40) in the team standings. Two Mid-Suburban League runners earned sectional victories. Elk Grove sophomore Paul Ifianayi won the 400-meter dash in 49.06, and Conant senior Joe Sulentic won the 1,600 run in 4:19.42.

    The Community Character Coalition and the Village of Elk Grove Village recognized more than 150 area youth for their community service work, and awarded Fallen Soldier Memorial Scholarships to three area high school seniors at a ceremony last week.

For the second straight day, Farina belted 2 home runs as she went 3-for-3 with a walk in the Vikings' 7-2 win at Elk Grove on Wednesday in the Mid-Suburban League second-place crossover.

    In a matchup of the runner-up teams from Mid-Suburban League divisional play, Barrington edged host Prospect on Tuesday. The Broncos won 26-24, 17-25, 25-22.

     
  • Beutler’s blast lifts Fremd May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
    Fremd used a 3-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a victory that gave them a 4-2 victory over Rolling Meadows on Tuesday and wrapped up a second-place finish for the Vikings in the MSL West. Marcus Middlebrook tied it up with an RBI double in the final inning, and Sam Beutler finished the game by hitting a walk-off 2-run homer.

     
  • South Elgin knocks out Elk Grove May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
    South Elgin recovered after trailing by a goal to register a stunning 2-1 victory over No. 5 seed Elk Grove in Class 3A regional semifinal play in the second match Tuesday evening at Conant. Second-half goals from Andrea Walsh, the game-winner coming in sensational fashion in the 76th minute, helped send the No. 11 seeed Storm (8-8-2) through to the regional final this Friday against the host Cougars (11-4-5), who overwhelmed Streamwood 8-0 in the opener.

     
  • Buffalo Grove clinches in MSL East May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
    For the first time this century, Buffalo Grove will play for the Mid-Suburban League softball championship. Under third-year coach Jamie Paul, the Bison clinched the MSL East on Monday with a 6-5 victory over visiting Hersey.

     
  • Another command performance by Elk Grove’s Camacho May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
    Elk Grove senior pitcher David Camacho completed a perfect run through his Mid-Suburban League opponents, tossing a complete-game 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts as the Grenadiers wrapped up regular-season league play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Conant on Monday. Camacho improved to 7-1 overall and finished 6-0 against MSL foes. He allowed 2 walks. Luc DiMaso did most of the damage offensively for Elk Grove (21-8, 12-4). He had 2 hits — a solo homer and a double — and scored both runs. Michael Anciulis also had 2 hits, including a double.

    Conant's softball team went above .500 in the tough Mid-Suburban West with a 14-9 victory at Hoffman Estates (3-20, 3-12) on Saturday morning.

    Fremd’s talent rises to the top May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Fremd boys track and field team has a group of talented athletes from top to bottom. In Friday's Mid-Suburban League championship meet at Hoffman Estates, the Vikings showed just how deep a group they are. Despite finishing first in only two events, Fremd was still able to win the MSL title by edging Barrington, who finished second, by a score of 105-93.

    Barrington Hills resident Bernard H. Shapiro, director of litigation for Prairie State Legal Services, in Rockford, will receive the Joseph R. Bartylak Memorial Legal Services Award from the Illinois State Bar Association at the organization's 137th annual meeting in June.

     
  • Barton, BG seniors enjoy big day May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    It was Senior Day for Buffalo Grove's softball team on Wednesday. Senior third baseman Erin Barton couldn't have begun the celebration of her own day any better. Barton belted a 3-run homer in the first inning and that proved plenty for sophomore ace Julia Camardo, who went on to shut out visiting Wheeling 5-0. Camardo (11-6) tossed a 1-hitter for the Bison (12-7) who improved to 8-4 in the Mid-Suburban East, two games in front of Elk Grove (7-7).

     
  • Roman, Prospect surprise Buffalo Grove May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    Freshman Angela Roman collected more than half of visiting Prospect's RBI when the Knights stunned Mid-Suburban East softball leader Buffalo Grove 9-4 on Tuesday. Roman, who went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, belted a two-out 3-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Knights a 9-1 lead. It was Roman's second homer of the season. She also hit one against Fremd last Saturday.
