  • Storms postpone season openers Aug 30, 2014 1:25 AM
Who says lightning doesn’t strike twice? For the second straight year, opening night of the high school football season was complicated by the arrival of stormy weather Friday night. Most sites saw games at least delayed by rough weather, and several were postponed to Saturday. Rolling Meadows and St. Viator got their game started in Arlington Heights, but the contest was quickly postponed with Meadows leading 7-0 in the first quarter. That game resumes at 5 p.m. Saturday. Conant at Lake Park was also postponed, and will be played Saturday evening, while Elk Grove and host St. Charles North will give it another try starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. Libertyville at Palatine was also postponed and will be completed starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. In that game, Libertyville led 27-17 when play was stopped in the third quarter.

Buffalo Grove captain Zach Masciopinto fired in the decisive goal early, converting a PK at 16 minutes to provide coach Rick Carlson’s team with a 1-0 victory over Elk Grove on Thursday night at Grant Blaney Stadium. That give the Bison (2-0-0, 1-0-0) a quick 3 points in its Mid-Suburban League opener, while Elk Grove (0-1-1, 0-1-0) is still in pursuit of its first win.

  • McAvoy, Elk Grove making a name for themselves Aug 26, 2014 10:50 PM
When you first try to pronounce O’Rayn McAvoy’s first name, you might not get it right. But the Elk Grove senior sure got things right in her first match as a full-time member of the varsity volleyball team. She went 6-of-7 in both attacking and serving with 3 kills and an ace as the Grenadiers won their season opener 25-22, 25-17 over visiting Maine West on Tuesday night.

  • MSL East preview: High ceiling for Wheeling Aug 26, 2014 6:27 PM
Rolling Meadows and Elk Grove have dominated the Mid-Suburban East over about the last 10 years. And the East ended in a three-way tie last year between Rolling Meadows, Elk Grove and Hersey. But a new contender could emerge this season from one of the most unlikely places. Wheeling, which has had just two winning seasons in the last 17 years, could be poised to clear the first hurdle in the resurgence of the program under coach Brent Pearlman.

  • New profile, same attitude for Elk Grove Aug 21, 2014 9:59 PM
Elk Grove and Larry Calhoun will be exploring new territory this year. Calhoun, who is in his third year as head coach for the Grenadiers, will be finding out what life is like without Adam O’Malley, who’d even started at quarterback the year before Calhoun arrived. “It was a big loss for all of us,” said Calhoun of O’Malley’s departure. “But we have a couple of guys that we think will be pretty good in their own right.”

  • Powell helps power Barrington to state Legion title Aug 2, 2014 8:53 PM
Brad Powell almost did not play American Legion baseball this summer. “I came out at the last minute,” said Powell, who had planned to golf (scratch handicap) this summer. “But I really wanted to be with the guys. I knew this team was something and I could not leave it.” Barrington Post 158 is also glad Powell decided to stay with baseball. Especially on Saturday, when he came in to pitch four scoreless innings and belt a pair of hits to help lead Barrington to Illinois’ American Legion state championship with a 10-7 victory over Galesburg Post 285.

  • Surging Barrington in Legion state finals Aug 2, 2014 1:18 PM
After picking up the pitching win Wednesday night, Barrington’s Scott Nelson used his bat on Friday to help his team advance to today’s finals of the Illinois American Legion state finals. Nelson turned a 10-pitch at-bat into a RBI double in the sixth inning to help spark a 2-run outburst as Barrington Post 158 topped Galesburg Post 285, 4-2, Friday at Recreation Park in Arlington Heights. Barrington (40-7), which has now won 14 in a row and 32 of its last 33 games, will play in the finals of the double elimination tournament at 11 a.m. today.

  • Mixed results for local teams Jul 31, 2014 11:45 PM
Area teams went in three different directions on the second day of the Illinois State Legion tournament at Recreationan Park in Arlington Heights on Thursday. Barrington Post 158 was a winner and stayed unbeaten in the winner’s bracket of the double elimination tournament. Northwest Post 690 dropped a 1-run decision and moved into the loser’s bracket while Arlington Post 208 lost for the second time in two days and was eliminated. Northwest pitcher Dylan Roskin went 8 strong innings, allowing only 4 hits. But the Schaumburg graduate was let down by his teammates in key moments as Galesburg Post 385 won 4-3. “It was just a dogfight out there until the end,” said Roskin, who will be attending Miami of Ohio and hopes to walk on to the baseball team. “My teammates had me and were making plays. We just had a couple of small mistakes and they made us pay for them.” Roskin had trouble locating the strike zone to start the game, throwing six of his first seven pitches for balls. So co-head coach Kevin Miller trotted out to the mound to talk to the left-hander. “I just told him to breath,” Miller said. “I stood in front of him and had him take a deep breath. I then told him that his game was no different from any other.” Roskin got the message, retiring the next 12 batters. Meanwhile, Northwest (25-8-1) was able to build a 2-0 lead as Patrick O’Malley singled twice, stole two bases and scored once on a RBI single by his brother Adam and the other time on a wild pitch. “I was able to get on base and move around a bit,” Patrick O’Malley said. “I was just trying to scrap ways to score.” Galesburg (35-15), which will meet Barrington in the winner’s bracket game at 3 p.m. today, came back to tie the game in the sixth inning. Drew Claeys had a 2-run single scoring Logan Davis, who reached on an error and Todd Matz, who reached on an infield single. Northwest regained the lead in the seventh when Brandon Cortez doubled to lead off the inning. He moved to third on Adam O’Malley’s ground out to third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2. But another error by Northwest in the bottom of the seventh led to Galesburg’s final 2 runs. Todd Matz reached on an error and Drake Sykes was intentionally walked. With two outs, Carson Cheesman tripled to the right field wall, putting Galesburg up for good. Northwest will play Swansea/Fairview Heights Posts 2007/978 at 11 a.m. today. The winner of that game will play the loser of Barrington-Galesburg at 7 p.m. “Dylan pitched hard for us today,” Miller said. “We are just going to have to come back tomorrow and win in the morning and then again later.” Fairview Hts. 6, Arlington 4: Host Arlington was eliminated after losing its second game in less than 16 hours. “We needed more pressure games and I think it showed up in the tournament,” said Arlington coach Lloyd Meyer, whose team finished 35-6 for the year. “We just didn’t hit very well.” Joe Silva and Alex Niecikowski each had 2 hits for Arlington. Barrington 14 Mattoon 3: Barrington took care of business in just seven innings to advance in the winner’s bracket to play Galesburg at 3 p.m. today. Barrington, which has won 13 in a row and 31 of its last 32 games, knocked out 10 hits. Six of them were for extra bases. Mitch Pfeiffer doubled and scored 2 runs, Dan Kubiuk had a triple and scored 3 times, Jared Ludwig, Anthony Lombardi and Quentin Sefick each had a double. Scott Nelson struck out three while picking up the win, and he also had a 3-run triple. Friday’s Games: Northwest Post vs. Swansea/Fairview Heights Post 11 a.m.; Barrington Post 158 vs. Galesburg Post 385, 3 p.m.; Winner Game 1 vs. loser Game 2, 7 p.m.

  • Ludwig leads Barrington past Arlington Jul 30, 2014 10:48 PM
Ahern Ludwig and Barrington tamed Arlington 3-1 in the opening round of the Illinois American Legion baseball state tournament at Recreation Park in Arlington Heights on Wednesday. Ludwig kept Arlington Post 208 off balance with his fastball, and Barrington Post 158 came up with just enough offense to move into Thursday’s semifinals of the winner’s bracket in the double-elimination tournament.
