St. Charles North controls Williams, Elgin Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
When St. Charles North arrived at Elgin for an Upstate Eight Conference River Division matchup , North Stars’ boys basketball coach Tom Poulin wanted his team to do one thing: stop Maroons’ senior Arie Williams. Williams helped fuel a brief third quarter rally for Elgin, but St. Charles North kept him silent most of the night as a balanced North Stars offense, led by Quinten Payne’s 14 points and 11 rebounds, helped earn a 64-53 win on Elgin’s senior night Saturday.

Productive day for Glenbard N. at Maine EastFeb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Heading to Champaign next weekend? Your probabilities of running into a few young men with bleached blonde hair are looking strong. And when you do, you will have found Glenbard North's 7 state-qualified wrestlers, all hoping for individual state titles and traditionally wearing the hairdos. Success for the Panthers came easy at the Class 3A Maine East sectional Saturday afternoon as Jon Marmolego (120 pounds), Jered Cortez (126) and Brian Murphy (152) all grabbed first-place wins in their respective weight classes, while Jimique Davis at 160 took second place, Patrick Augstyn (106) and Johnny Gosinski (132) placed third and Colton Wegner (170) sneaked into Champaign in fourth place. “We brought 10 guys here, seven got out and I can remember when we'd be happy if we got one guy out,” said Panthers' coach Mark Hahn. “To get seven guys out that's pretty good. We had five in the finals, pretty good tournament, all the way around.”

Batavia catches up to Elgin Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
The Elgin boys basketball team hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter Friday night. The Maroons then didn’t hit another field goal of any kind for a quarter and half as Batavia didn’t allow the Maroons any open looks. The Bulldogs turned a 4-point deficit into a 14-point lead during the stretch and cruised to a 62-50 Upstate Eight River Division victory at Chesbrough Field House in Elgin.

Huntley closing on on FVC Valley 3-peat Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The Huntley boys basketball team is on the verge of completing a Fox Valley Conference three-peat. The Red Raiders (15-6, 9-0) can wrap up their third straight FVC Valley Division title tonight with a win against second-place Dundee-Crown (16-5, 7-2) in Carpentersville. Huntley defeated the Chargers 45-38 on Jan. 19. “This is a big week for us in terms of our goals and where we stand going into the playoffs,” senior forward Amanze Egekeze said after Wednesday’s victory at Crystal Lake South. “We know we’ve got to go on the road, play at a high level, execute and get better with each game.”

Elgin presses past DeKalb Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
A proactive approach helped Elgin’s boys basketball team offset its size disadvantage and pound visiting DeKalb 78-40 Tuesday in nonconference action at Chesbrough Field House. The Maroons countered DeKalb’s 6-foot-7 Andre Harris, 6-6 Jake Smith and 6-5 Justin Love by implementing full-court pressure for the first time this season, resulting in 26 turnovers by the Barbs, 10 in the second quarter alone.

Glenbard North snares 13th straight regional title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Toughness matters in wrestling, which partly explains why host Glenbard North secured its 13th straight regional title Saturday and advanced 10 individuals to next week’s Class 3A sectional. Seven Panthers competed in championship matches Saturday afternoon. Six wrestled their way to individual titles, thereby lifting Glenbard North (222 points) to the team title ahead of Wheaton North (183.5) and St. Charles East (174.5). “I thought we wrestled pretty tough,” Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn said. “We wanted the whole team to contribute points and we needed everybody — even if they weren’t seeded as well — to score points and everybody did. We knew it would be really close with St. Charles (East) and Wheaton North. We knew it would be a battle and I thought we stepped up.”

McCullum, Larkin steal it from Elgin Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Larkin stole one from rival Elgin Friday night. More specifically, junior guard Kendale McCullum did. After Larkin guard Quentin Ruff failed to extend a 2-point lead by missing both free throws with 11 seconds left, Elgin point guard Arie Williams raced upcourt with no timeouts left, looking to tie the Upstate Eight River game or possibly win it with a 3-pointer. Williams entered with 2 game-winning shots to his credit this season. Elgin’s leading scorer had already drained 8 of his 14 attempts from 3-point range, but Williams was met just inside midcourt by a phalanx of three Larkin defenders, including 6-foot-6 junior Drew Jones. Williams was caught in no man’s land as the Elgin play unraveled due to miscommunication amid the jet engine-level screams from the respective student sections. While Williams dribbled and scanned furiously for an escape route, McCullum came from his left and tipped the ball away with three seconds left. McCullum sprinted ahead and ran out the clock, sealing a heartstopping 68-66 win for the Royals at Chesbrough Field House.

Elgin-Larkin, Jacobs vs. Dundee-Crown set to go Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley area’s two fiercest boys basketball rivalries have produced the season’s two best games to date. Larkin has defeated crosstown rival Elgin twice this season, most recently a 60-51 victory in the Elgin Holiday Tournament title game. But it was the first meeting — Larkin’s 76-73 double-overtime victory on Dec 12 — that will go down as one of the best in the history of the 121-game series, which Elgin still leads 79-42. Not to be outdone, Jacobs and Dundee-Crown battled through two overtimes on Jan. 15 before the Golden Eagles prevailed 76-66. Host Jacobs tied that game at the regulation buzzer when senior Nick Ledinsky drained a step-back 3-pointer from the corner.

Burlington Central’s kiddie corps has exceeded expectations Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
It's been well chronicled that Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith knew he had some talent coming in when he took the Rockets' head coaching job. And Smith knows talent. His daughter, Kelsey, plays at DePaul and as a boys baskeball coach for several seasons at St. Charles North, as well as a former high school and college player himself, Smith knows good players when he sees them. But even Smith admits being surprised at how well his freshman-laden team has done this season. At 19-4 overall and having secured their first Big Northern East championship since 2006-07, the Rockets also cracked the Daily Herald Top 20 this week for the first time this season, and they're the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 3A regional that they will host. Central has not won a girls basketball regional since 1990 and has only three regional banners in program history.
