  • Wheeling wins Warren tourney; Fremd 5th at Montini Dec 29, 2013 1:23 AM
    With junior guard Hailey Dammeier scoring a career-high 20 points in a 56-46 win over Deerfield on Saturday, Wheeling’s girls basketball team won the Warren tournament with a 4-1 record. Carmel also went 4-1 but the Wildcats defeated the Corsairs 45-42 in head-to-head competition of the six-team round robin event in Gurnee.

    Hersey coach Mary Fendley has guided the Huskies into their share of championship games at the Wheaton North Christmas Tournament.But never did they reach the final game the way they did Friday night. Trailing Lyons Township in the semifinal by 18 points with under 6:30 remaining, the Huskies rallied for a 65-60 overtime triumph.

     
  • Collins, Maine West advance at D-C Dec 27, 2013 12:18 AM
    Maine West’s all-time leading scorer Brittany Collins showed why she has earned that milestone as the senior collected a game-high 32 points with 12 rebounds to help lead the Warriors to a 50-46 victory in the opening round of the 31st annual Dundee-Crown Charger Classic Girls Tournament. It was Collins’ fourth game of the season with 30 or more points and the Saint Xavier recruit has a double-double in early every game this season.

    Jessica Hohlweg said the game plan for St. Viator on Monday night was to get the ball inside. The Lions succeeded quite often and Hohlweg was often the beneficiary. The 5-foot-11 junior forward scored a career-high 15 points to help lead the Lions to a 47-38 triumph over Leyden in the first-round game of the 31st annual St. Viator Snowflake Girls Basketball Tournament in Arlington Heights.

    Many basketball fans will get an early start to their annual feast of Holiday basketball tournaments. Area teams competing at Jacobs, Elgin, Glenbard West and Wheeling will begin tournament play before Christmas, and all area teams will be in action after the holiday. Wheeling tips off its 36th annual Hardwood Classic on Monday with a full slate of games beginning at 9 a.m. It will culminate Saturday evening with the title game at 8:45 p.m.; St. Viator (9-1) and unbeaten Fremd (9-0) hope to earn spots in it.

    Over the many years Hersey’s girls basketball team has been playing in the Wheaton North Christmas tournament, the Huskies have gained a reputation for always finishing higher than their seed in the 16-team event.This season, the Huskies won’t have a chance to do that. But they would love to equal it. Coach Mary Fendley’s squad, boasting a 10-1 record, is the top seed at Wheaton North followed by Downers Grove North, Willowbrook and West Aurora.

    More than 100 members of East Leyden’s Key Club, National Honor Society, Pulse Club, Art Club and Italian Honor Society created holiday greeting cards to be distributed to children who are in hospitals during the holiday season.

    Proviso East girls basketball coach Ezra PridGeon stressed the importance for his Pirates to play four quarters in every game, regardless of the opponent. “We must play hard every second and every minute of every quarter,” he said. Everything seemed to click for the Pirates on Thursday night in Northlake. With 6-foot senior forward Tia Barlow scoring 14 points and 6-0 junior forward Jasmine Levy reaching double figures with 11 points, Proviso East used a solid all-around effort to defeat the Eagles 69-22 in the West Suburban Gold match.

    His drive this season is anchored on the sorrow he endured last season. Kamil Purta, a senior at East Leyden who skates for the co-op Leyden Eagles, is in his third season on the team that also features players from West Leyden, Elmwood Park and Ridgewood. And based on an injury last season, he's got a healthy outlook on how important it is to have fun playing hockey.

    Barrington’s girls basketball team ran its record to 8-1 on Tuesday night with a 59-52 victory at Grayslake North. Senior Brooke Gunderson led the Fillies with 14 points while also adding 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 rebounds.

    Conant’s girls basketball team won for the fourth time in five games as the Cougars posted a 53-35 nonconference win over visiting St. Viator on Saturday afternoon in Hoffman Estates.

     
  • Leyden’s Hall claims a third Valhalla victory Dec 7, 2013 6:12 PM
    Arlington Lanes was packed to capacity Saturday, as all 40 alleys were taken by the 20 varsity and 20 JV teams competing in the Valhalla Invitational. And as usual, things went like clockwork at the Fremd-hosted tournament. The top six individual bowlers posted averages over 200, led by Leyden senior Reba Hall, who won the individual tourney crown with a 231.33 average. Oswego took home the team title. Hall, who was been a star bowler for the Eagles since her freshman year and has placed ninth and third at the state tourney the last two seasons, rolled top games of 236 and 235. She’s excelled every season at Valhalla, winning the invite 3 of 4 years.

    Junior Alondra Chavarria scored 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead Leyden to a 44-30 victory over Addison Trail, giving the Eagles the championship of the Addison Trail-Fenton tournament. Chavarria, freshman Autumn McGee (6 points, 5 rebounds) and freshman Artasia Gusman (7 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals) were named to the all-tourney team.

    Before a big opening-night crowd, visiting Leyden spoiled the night for Rolling Meadows and retiring wresting head coach Dave Froehlich with a thrilling 34-33 victory in a nonconference dual on the Mustangs’ home mats. Froehlich, who is in his 36th year at the helm (and was a state medalist at Leyden), will be stepping down from his spot as head coach as well as athletic director when the current school year comes to an end.

    Wheeling junior Deanna Kuzmanic, who received all-state recognition following her sophomore season, scored a career-high 38 points as the Wildcats posted a 63-53 victory over the host team of the Niles North Thanksgiving tournament on Saturday night.

    They're not typically among the highest performers, but several Northwest suburban high schools -- Rolling Meadows, Bartlett, Schaumburg and Maine East among them -- have shown marked improvement on standardized testing, according to state report cards released Thursday. “Every student comes in with different strengths and talents and we're all about taking each student as far as they can possibly go,” said Maine East Principal Mike Pressler.
