Naperville Central gets 'toughest' out of the way Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
A wise older man once imparted some sage playoff wisdom to Andy Nussbaum. (Former Naperville Central football coach) Joe Bunge once told me the first playoff game is always the toughest,” said Redhawks coach Nussbaum. “The first 29 games we played, we didn't have to turn in uniforms if we lost.” That's not a worry for Naperville Central, at least not yet. The No. 3 seed Redhawks did what higher-seeded teams always hope to do Tuesday, breaking out to a big early lead on No. 14 East Aurora, keeping the Tomcats at arm's length and coming home with a 49-35 win at the Class 4A Benet regional.

Thomas hit Payne with a baseball-like pass, and the North Stars’ senior guard thundered home a two-handed dunk with two seconds remaining to accentuate the North Stars’ 55-50 victory Thursday night in St. Charles.

Two high school boys basketball teams were sorely in need of a victory Friday night. Unfortunately for injury depleted South Elgin (2-10, 0-6), it was East Aurora (2-9, 1-5) that emerged with its first Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division win of the season, handing the Storm a 69-57 setback in Aurora. Jonathon Villezcas, Peetie Davis and Tyree Willis all reached double-figure scoring by halftime, as the Tomcats blistered the net at a 70 percent clip from the field (19-for-27) on their way to a 48-27 lead at the intermission.

"We had a pretty hard practice yesterday," said Wolfsmith. "We usually don't do that but we wanted to talk about some of the things that we didn't do well." The strategy paid dividends, as the Hawks (7-3, 4-1) overcame a sluggish start with a furious second-quarter rally and pulled away for a 63-46 Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division victory over the Tomcats (1-9, 0-5) in Bartlett.

  • Neuqua Valley thwarts East Aurora’s plan Dec 7, 2012 12:00 AM
The plan was to hang tough with the heavy favorites and then just take your chances later in the game. For East Aurora — searching for its first win of the year — the plan only worked briefly as the Tomcats hit a few 3-pointers in the first quarter and let unbeaten Neuqua Valley (7-0, 3-0) know it might be in for a ballgame.

Broger galloped for 3 touchdowns over the Tomcats (0-4, 0-2), which was more than enough to break the Storm (2-2, 1-1) from their two-game slide. Two of Broger's touchdowns were from over 20 yards out, while only registering 7 carries for the night.
