  • Broger’s return boosts South Elgin Sep 15, 2012 12:00 AM
    South Elgin Storm senior halfback Jeff Broger showed no signs of discomfort with his hamstring in the Storm's lopsided 41-6 Upstate Eight Valley victory over the East Aurora Tomcats Friday evening. Broger galloped for 3 touchdowns over the Tomcats (0-4, 0-2), which was more than enough to break the Storm (2-2, 1-1) from their two-game slide. Two of Broger's touchdowns were from over 20 yards out, while only registering 7 carries for the night.

    An all-day safety conference will be held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates on Friday, Sept. 14, to heighten the safety awareness of school administrators, police and firefighters and anyone else in the community in charge of safety. Topics that will be covered range from internet safety and drug abuse to gangs and staying safe during a tornado. The event is free.

Sophomore Jordan Flint threw just 2 passes in two games since replacing injured starter Steve Hrbacek early in the season opener. The Hawks called passing plays on their first eight snaps, Flint was forced to scramble on one play, to get the ball inside the 5 before scoring the first of 9 touchdowns in a 67-0 Upstate Eight Valley victory Friday over East Aurora at Millennium Field.

    A sophomore basketball coach from East Aurora High School has resigned but will not be criminally charged for choking a player after losing a game, authorities said Tuesday. Archie Hubbard resigned Feb. 6, two days after the alleged choking incident, a school spokesman said.

    After beating East Aurora 56-45 earlier in the season, the host Bartlett boys basketball team didn’t expect to trail nearly the entire game in the rematch Saturday. That’s just what the Hawks faced, but a solid defensive effort in the fourth quarter helped spark a rally which ended in a 45-42 Bartlett win over the Tomcats (2-19, 1-8) in Upstate Eight Valley Division play.

And with it the Bartlett girls basketball team acknowledged its wake up call and used East Aurora to let everyone know there’s a renewed sense of purpose among the Hawks. After losing for the first time this season Friday night, a 58-45 setback at No. 3 Waubonsie Valley, the No. 1 Hawks came home Saturday night for Senior Night and made easy work of East Aurora, 62-30, in Upstate Eight Valley action.

    Less than 24 hours after suffering a 55-30 loss to state-ranked Peoria Central, Geneva ran into another highly talented team in Pleasure Ridge (Ky.) Thursday afternoon. While there were several positive signs to be found, the Vikings (6-6) dropped a 76-50 decision to Kentucky’s fifth-ranked team on the third day of the 46th annual East Aurora Holiday Basketball Tournament.
