    More than 400 dancers from 18 studios and three independent dancers participated in the annual Des Plaines Dance Idol Competition at Prairie Lakes Community Center. “This is the seventh year of Dance Idol and it is exciting to see how this dance convention has become what it is today,” said Nancy Suwalski, cultural arts supervisor for the Des Plaines Park District.

  • Apache Park in Des Plaines getting renovation with state funds Jan 8, 2015 3:53 PM
    The Des Plaines Park District has been awarded a $251,000 grant from the state Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Program for the renovation of Apache Park, 2100 Pine St. The park will be equipped with a walking/jogging path, a picnic shelter, a splash pad and a youth soccer field to complement the playground that was built in 2012. The renovation is scheduled to begin in the fall, with completion scheduled for the spring of 2016.

  • New Year starts early for the preschool set in Des Plaines and Schaumburg Dec 31, 2014 4:23 PM
    The sound of noisemakers pierced the air as 400 brightly colored balloons descended to the floor, as more than 40 children and their parents rang in the new year, albeit 12 hours early, at the second annual Preschool Noon Year’s Eve Party at the Prairie Lakes Community Center in Des Plaines. Crafts, coloring, sparkly hats, noisemakers, games, and fun preceded the giant Noon Balloon Drop, after which it took all of 10 minutes for the pint-size revelers to stomp and pop every last balloon that hit the floor.

    Santa Claus visited the Des Plaines Park District Creative Corners preschool children on Wednesday and Thursday Dec. 17 and 18. They each took a turn sitting on Santa’s lap and let him know just what they wanted for Christmas. Santa asked each child if they were going to leave him cookies and milk on Christmas Eve, most said yes.

Northwest Hwy. “This is the perfect way to ring in a joyful holiday season,” said Linda Traina, Des Plaines Park District superintendent of recreation.

  • Women’s health fair Wednesday afternoon in Des Plaines Sep 23, 2014 5:02 PM
    Des Plaines’ annual Women’s Health and Fitness Day Celebration is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the Prairie Lakes Community Center. The event includes free half-hour classes for Zumba toning and gold class, cardio tone, and cycle/yoga. There also will be free blood pressure checks, body fat analyses, flu shots for a nominal fee, and experts who will provide fliers and handouts about health and wellness.
