    Des Plaines Elementary District 62 will conduct a community open house from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to show off renovations and improvements made at Orchard Place Elementary School, 2727 Maple St., Des Plaines. The school's new wing features Technology Integrated Learning Environments, classrooms, a multipurpose room, cafeteria, and a renovated playground.

    Des Plaines Elementary District 62 has named Ellen Teelucksingh the assistant superintendent for student services, effective July 1. Teelucksingh replaces Brad Voehringer, who was recently hired to lead Pennoyer School District 79 in Norridge. Teelucksingh currently serves as the assistant superintendent for special services in Lombard District 44.

    Spring Registration and Transportation Enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year is now open. District 62 parents and guardians must submit Registration Accounting and Transportation Enrollment forms by May 3. Both forms are available on the district website and will be sent home with students the week of April 8.

The foundation raised about $17,000 during its annual dinner and fundraiser Feb. 22 at Café la Cave in Des Plaines.

    The Reach to Teach Benefit sponsored by the Des Plaines Elementary District 62 Foundation will be held from 6 to 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at Café la Cave, 2777 Mannheim Road, Des Plaines. Proceeds support programs and initiatives that enrich learning for District 62 students. The event includes hors d'oeuvres, dinner, cash beverages, raffles, a silent auction, and a trivia competition. Silent auction and raffle items are still needed.

    The State Board of Education named 26 Northwest suburban elementary schools to the Illinois Honor Roll on Monday — half of them from one district alone. School districts receiving the honor included Wheeling Township District 21, Arlington Heights District 25, River Trails District 26, Schaumburg Township District 54, Mount Prospect District 57, Elk Grove Township District 59 and Des Plaines District 62. District 54 alone has 13 schools on the list.

  • D62 OKs 6.6 percent increase in tax levy Dec 25, 2012 1:59 PM
    The Des Plaines Elementary School District 62 school board last week adopted a 2012 levy request of approximately $64.4 million, an increase of $4.1 million or 6.6 percent from the 2011 levy. About $2.3 million of the projected increase comes from new property, while $1.8 million comes from the Consumer Price Index increase that is authorized by state law, which this year is 3.0 percent.

    Jane Westerhold, superintendent of Des Plaines School District 62, has been selected the 2013 Illinois Superintendent of the Year by the Illinois Association of School Administrators. “I am extremely honored and humbled to be recognized by my peers, and although I am extremely proud of District 62’s accomplishments over the past eight years, I certainly cannot take the credit in isolation,” Westerhold said.

Recently, local OfficeMax representatives surprised Des Plaines' Plainfield Elementary School teacher, Jennifer Bergstrom, with $1,000 worth of school supplies.
