    Look at a family with children and there is probably a sibling rivalry, no matter what age. Kaneland has a couple of them crisscrossing its boys and girls cross country teams. Each unit as a whole actually seems to motivate the other.

    Mid-Suburban League girls cross country champion Palatine proved to be the class of the Class 3A regional it hosted Saturday at Deer Grove East. Led by sophomores Sabina Yosif (second) and Kelly O’Brien (third), the Pirates finished at 28 points for a comfortable victory. Amy Kieliszewski (sixth), Liz Cox (eighth) and Kara Burton (ninth) gave Palatine half of the race’s top 10 finishers.

    Step 1, get healthy. Step 2, get in shape. Step 3, go compete. Glenbard South sophomore Diane Lipa managed to complete all three steps for Saturday afternoon’s Class 2A Wheaton Academy girls cross country regional at Kress Creek Farms in West Chicago. Lipa toured the course in 18:12.5 to lead the Raiders to the regional championship.

    The last thing St. Charles North senior Ashley England wanted as she approached the finish line Saturday at the Class 3A Wheaton North regional at St. James Farm was to be looking over her shoulder. So England made sure she took a big enough lead she didn’t have to. England won the regional championship with a time of 17:37, 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Torree Scull from St. Charles East.

    Vivian Oberbeck just ran her race. That was good enough for first place while leading her Vernon Hills teammates to a second-place overall finish at the Class 2A Burlington Central girls cross country regional Saturday. The Cougars totaled 60 points, just behind Crystal Lake Central, which won the team title with 47 points.

    Both Hersey’s boys cross country team and Conant junior Zach Dale kept rolling at the Class 3A Hoffman Estates regional Saturday at Busse Woods. Hersey, ranked No. 3 in the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Poll, secured its first Mid-Suburban League since 1972 last week, and the Huskies did not slow down on Saturday snaring the regional title with 41 points easily outdistancing second-place Fremd (81). Dale, who was coming off an MSL individual title, continued to impress on Saturday. The Cougars junior broke away midway through the race in securing the title in 15:06.

  • Palatine runs to regional success Oct 26, 2013 7:14 PM
    Palatine produced a winning result at the boys cross country regional it hosted on Saturday at Deer Grove East. The Pirates, led by a second-place finish from junior Graham Brown, finished at 45 points to advance as a group to next week’s Schaumburg sectional. Palatine also counted the efforts of Argeni Bailon (5th), Emil Kozakiewicz (9th), Adam Brauer (14th) and Eddie Graham (15th). Lake Zurich finished second at 60 and had three top-10 finishers in Matt Perreira (4th), Will Llanos (8th) and Dave Brown (10th). Also advancing to the sectional was third-place Barrington, which was led by third-place finisher Jake Herb. McHenry’s Jesse Reiser led fourth-place McHenry with a winning time of 14:55. at Niles West: New Trier, led by a winning performance from Chase Silverman, won the team title with 27 points. Maine West finished seventh, missing team advancement to the sectional by one place. The Warriors qualified two runners as individuals — junior Alex Liston and senior Geoff Rozo. Class 2A: St. Viator placed seventh in the Wheaton Academy regional won by Yorkville, but the Lions advanced two runners to the sectional round as senior Nick Brey finished fourth overall and Jacob Bonanotte was 34th.

  • Van Vlierbergen leads Jacobs to regional title Oct 26, 2013 7:10 PM
    Jacobs junior Lauren Van Vlierbergen, seventh in the state last year in Class 3A, began her run to Peoria for 2013 with the individual championship at Saturday’s Class 3A Hononegah regional. Van Vlierbergen finished the race in a time of 17 minutes, 22 seconds to lead the Golden Eagles to 34 points and the team championship. Huntley was second with 53 points and Larkin also qualified for next Saturday’s Waubonsie Valley sectional by finishing fifth with 147 points.

    Huntley sophomore Keagan Smith was the individual champion and Jacobs won the team title Saturday at the Class 3A Hononegah boys cross country regional. Smith finished in a time of 15 minutes, 19 seconds and led the Red Raiders to second place with 64 points. Larkin also qualified as a team, finishing sixth with 151 points.

  • Libertyville takes the lead in regional victory Oct 26, 2013 5:33 PM
    Host Libertyville was more than ready to welcome the girls cross country state series onto its home course Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats captured the championship of their own nine-team Class 3A regional on the 3-mile Adler Memorial Park course by a comfortable 40-66 margin over runner-up Warren with their great depth from top to bottom getting the job done. Sophomore individual champion Kaitlyn Ko (18:56.55) helped carry Buffalo Grove to third place by a score of 80-95 over Deerfield.

  • Gutt, Schaumburg get it up and running Oct 26, 2013 4:59 PM
    Schaumburg junior Ali Gutt was held out of the Mid-Suburban League conference meet due to missing a practice after over sleeping. On Saturday the Saxons junior was wide awake. Gutt pulled away in the final mile in securing the individual title in 17:54, helping Schaumburg edge host Hoffman Estates 38-41 for the Class 3A regional title at Busse Woods.

    Last week John Wold completed a 4-for-4 sweep of conference championships. On Saturday at Kress Creek Farms in West Chicago, the Glenbard South senior made it 4-for-4 in regional titles also.

  • Buffalo Grove packs up a victory in Libertyville Oct 26, 2013 5:38 PM
    The Buffalo Grove boys cross country team got its postseason off to a great start Saturday afternoon at the Libertyville Class 3A regional. The Bison rolled to first place in the nine-team meet at Adler Memorial Park with 47 points while the host Wildcats nipped Warren 93-95 for runner up honors on the 3-mile course. Highland Park outdistanced Stevenson 109-142 for fourth place with both of those squads earning berths to the Schaumburg sectional next Saturday at Busse Woods. That left one final spot in the sectional meet, and it was Zion-Benton pulling out a 151-152 squeaker over Mundelein for sixth place and a trip to sectionals.
