O'Kelly won't quit county post despite township winApr 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Veteran Lake County Board member Diana O'Kelly on Wednesday said she won't resign that post once she's sworn in as Fremont Township's supervisor in May. The Mundelein-area Republican said she'll finish her two-year county term and let voters choose her successor. Letting voters elect her successor is "the fairest thing," she said. She promised not to accept a salary for the remainder of her county and forest preserve district board service.

Tuesday is the last day for residents of suburban Cook County to register to vote in the April 9 election, Cook County Clerk David Orr said. Voters will elect mayors and members of municipal councils, library boards, park districts and school districts. Many communities also have referendums on their ballots.

Bob Getz, who was hoping a discovery recount would have paved the way for a court challenge, has finally conceded the Kane County Board District 22 race to Douglas Scheflow, the Republican who beat him by 13 votes. His decision came Monday, days after the recount didn't go his way. "I've been advised it will cost me approximately $10,000 to proceed to the next step,"Getz wrote to Scheflow in his letter of concession.

Bob Getz, who barely lost a Kane County Board race earlier this month, filed paperwork seeking a discovery recount Friday, but it won't stop Douglas Scheflow from being sworn into office on Monday. "The election results are official and certified, so the recount will have no impact on the swearing in, or election of Mr. Scheflow," said Stan Bond, Kane County's chief deputy clerk.

Even after every vote cast during the presidential election has been counted, the closest race in DuPage County still might not be over. Democratic Party leaders say they are planning to seek a partial recount now that soon-to-be official tallies show Republican Gary Grasso defeating Democrat Sharon Bryant by 21 votes for the third and final District 3 seat on the county board.

Despite big wins by Democratic candidates across the suburbs, control of the Lake County Board will remain in Republican hands. Because of redistricting and a remapping process that shrunk the board from 23 to 21 members, every seat was up for election last week. When the ballots were counted, 13 Republicans and eight Democrats were victorious.

Diane Shapiro, Republican candidate for Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County criticized Democratic incumbent Dorothy Brown for accepting campaign contributions from subordinates and from vendors doing business with the clerk's office, whose 2,100 employees are responsible for keeping records for Cook County's unified court system which ranks among the largest in the world. Brown, who is seeking her fourth term as court clerk, faced similar charges earlier this year from Chicago alderman Ricardo "Rick" Munoz, who opposed her in the Democratic primary. She described accepting campaign contributions from companies like On-Line Information Services, the Alabama vendor that manages Cook County e-filings, as a standard business practice and pointed out that the Cook County Board, not her office, approved the contract.

Lake County board candidate Michael Carbone has a criminal history, but not by the name he’s known in his capacity as a Grayslake school board member. Lake County circuit court records show Carbone was Michael R. Jorudd of unincorporated Ingleside when he pleaded guilty to reckless driving in Fox Lake in 2006. He was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. “I never had to do one day of the 30 days of that jail time,” Carbone said Thursday.
