    Sean Robinson, an Elgin resident and junior at Burlington Central High School, is one of about 50 high school students participating in Elgin Community College's latest college readiness initiative. Transitions Academy brings together an ethnically diverse group of students across the four high school districts within ECC's boundaries. “It's a good opportunity for me to be successful in life,” one student said.

    Elgin Community College was recognized Tuesday with the 2012 Bellwether Award, education's equivalent to football's Heisman Trophy. The Community College Futures Assembly chose ECC over hundreds of other schools, declaring its college readiness initiative the top instructional program in the country. "It underscores what we've been doing for a long time, indicating to people that partnership works," ECC President David Sam said.

Current Country Trails Principal Carie Walter is replacing Lloyd Stover at Central Middle School near Burlington.

    The 301 Central Education Foundation presents its annual fundraiser, “Trivia with a Twist — It’s Jimmy Buffet style!” on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Holiday Inn in Elgin. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the game beginning at 7 p.m. Cost is $50 per person for cheeseburgers and more, as well as free beer and wine.
