    Local Girl Scouts will begin taking orders for the 2015 Girl Scout Cookie Program from Jan. 9-30. New this year is Rah-Rah Raisins, a cookie featuring whole grain oats, plump juicy raisins, and trendy Greek yogurt-flavored chunks. The team of flavors in this new, crisp cookie is likely to attract customers and increase sales. The rich, creamy taste of Greek yogurt has exploded in popularity over the last several years. And, in a national Girl Scout Cookie Survey, over 65 percent of participants indicated they wanted an oatmeal raisin Girl Scout Cookie.

    The Kane County Fair 2014 Talent Contest first-place winners Sophia Peterson of Elgin (Junior Division) and Erin Newman of St. Charles (Senior Division) will represent Kane County and compete on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Official Talent Contest State Competition in Springfield.

    Carpentersville is seeking residents' input on strategies to enhance recreational uses along the Fox River at a Jan. 21 public hearing. It’s part of a regional study being done by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning expected to be completed this summer. The study will play some part in the Kane County Forest Preserve’s overall goal to remove the Carpentersville dam on the Fox River.

    Three 6-year-olds aspiring to be pirates learned valuable sailing skills and popular pirate jargon during a special Pirate Crew program at the Dundee Library on Saturday. Led by their librarian captain Kristen Mohr, students learned how to read the night sky using the North Star to sail their ships. They learned how to predict the weather at sea by the setting sun and learned the phrase, “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning.”
