    Alan Popp, Carpentersville's police chief for slightly more than a year, has been tapped to become the village's new public safety director. He will oversee both the village police and fire departments in his new role. "He's done a great job in his first year as police chief, he has all the qualifications to make the public safety director's job work," Village President Ed Ritter said.

    A deep fat fryer cooking fish and french fries caught fire Friday night at the Culver's restaurant in Carpentersville, authorities said. Fire fighting crews were called to the restaurant at 8000 Miller Road at 6:32 p.m., and were able to put the grease fire out within 10 minutes, according to the Carpentersville Fire Department.

    A fire that broke out Friday afternoon in a single-family home in Carpentersville was contained to a second-floor bedroom, authorities said. The fire started about 2:20 p.m. at 1503 Plymouth Circle and was out about 10 minutes after fire fighting crews arrived, according to Battalion Chief Kieran Stout of the Carpentersville Fire Department.

    Longtime Carpentersville Fire Chief John Schuldt, who had been on paid leave for nearly two weeks, resigned from the department and announced his retirement Friday, Village Manager J. Mark Rooney said. Schuldt, 53, had been with the fire department for almost 33 years and its chief since 1996. “I cannot entertain what's in the man's mind to retire,” Rooney said.

The boy was home with his aunt inside the single-story home on the 200 block of Riverview Drive when the mattress went up in flames about 11:45 a.m., but both escaped with minor injuries.

    With winter officially here, the Carpentersville Fire Department has started an iniative to emphasise winter fire awareness called “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires and Keep the Wreath Red.” When you drive past one of the three fire stations, you’ll see a wreath with red light bulbs in it. Every time there’s a holiday-related a fire, personnel will replace a red bulb with a white bulb.

    Carpentersville Fire Chief John Schuldt is going to jail. But it won’t be your typical jail; this one’s at Nick’s Pizzeria and Pub in Elgin. Schuldt will have an hour to raise money at the restaurant on Sept. 28 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He hopes to send affected kids to camp in 2012.
