Saying goodbye to seniors never an easy job Mar 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Win and advance. Lose and go home. Those are the basics when describing the annual Illinois High School Association’s boys basketball tournament. However, it doesn’t tell the entire story. In fact, it’s an oversimplification that barely scratches the surface.

Everyone shares a goal next week — survive and advance Feb 23, 2013 12:00 AM
There are a few weeks of the year that I enjoy a little more than most. This coming week is one of them. Monday night signals the opening tip-off of the Illinois High School Association's annual basketball tournament at gymnasiums throughout the state. It's America's Original March Madness with a 4-day head start this time around that I like to call, "February Frenzy."

Suttle saves Aurora Christian at buzzer Feb 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Ryan Suttle knew all the angles. Off an inbounds play with 6.4 seconds left and the score tied, the senior guard was in the right place at the right time to rebound Cory Windle's missed 3-point shot and score in one motion. The basketball fell through as the horn sounded for a 59-57 Eagles victory over top-seeded IC Catholic Prep on Friday in the Class 2A Westmont regional final. "I just saw Cory going up for the shot and I knew that if he missed it's going to be backside and it was going to be a long rebound. I just put myself in the right position. I was just there at the right time, I guess," said Suttle, who scored a game-high 21 points with 7 rebounds for the third-seeded Eagles. Aurora Christian (19-11) moves to the Byron sectional semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against 29-0 Winnebago, a 62-52 winner over Oregon. The Associated Press' No. 2 team in 2A, Winnebago beat the Eagles 70-57 on Jan. 29 in Aurora.

Aurora Christian passes up St. Edward Feb 20, 2013 12:00 AM
There is no deep mystery behind Aurora Christian's 6-game winning streak, punctuated by Wednesdays 78-66 victory over St. Edward in a Class 2A Westmont boys basketball regional semifinal. "We're passing the ball," Aurora Christian coach Pat McNamara explained. "We didn't do that early in the season. We're passing the ball better than we have all season the last 5 or 6 games. Guys are looking for each other and we do have shooters."

No questions about what ‘Q’ has meant to Poulin, N. Stars Feb 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Known to many as "Q," Quinten Payne has made quite an impact on the St. Charles North's basketball program since his arrival as a sophomore two years ago. After averaging 12.3 points and 5 rebounds per game as a sophomore, Payne earned all-Upstate Eight Conference River Division honors for the second straight season a year ago while scoring 17 points and snaring 6.7 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot-4 guard has saved the best for last during his senior campaign this season.

St. Bede ends Aurora Christian’s record-setting season Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
A school record for wins, a first conference title and a first regional championship — there certainly were plenty of firsts this year for Aurora Christian's girls basketball program. The first sectional win? That will have to wait, but with 14 of 15 players returning next year, it might not have to wait for long. Aurora Christian nearly made more history Monday against St. Bede at the Class 2A Somonauk sectional, erasing a 9-point halftime deficit with one of its typical second-half surges. The Eagles came all the way back to take a brief lead in the fourth quarter. In the end St. Bede's 6-foot-3 post Morgan Dean proved too much to handle. Dean scored 15 straight points for her team spanning the late second quarter through nearly the entire fourth, helping the Lady Bruins (18-15) hold on for a 47-41 victory.

Still seething from a loss to cross-town rival Aurora Central Catholic 6 days earlier, Aurora Christian’s boys basketball team came out with some renewed purpose against Marmion Friday night. Blasting off to a 12-0 lead in the first 4 ½ minutes, the Eagles (13-11, 2-7) built an 18-point first-half lead and then withstood a late rally by the host Cadets (9-16, 3-6) for a much-needed 55-48 Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division triumph in Aurora.
