  • St. Edward survives Aurora Central Catholic’s charge Dec 19, 2014 10:50 PM
Aurora Central Catholic threw everything it had at St. Edward in the fourth quarter Friday — a little full-court pressure, some Mario May down low and a lot of Brett Czerak hitting shots seemingly from the parking lot. St. Edward had an answer for it all, all 35 of the fourth-quarter points the Chargers put on the scoreboard. Sophomore Kelvin Cortez-Harvey proved to be the most clutch, making all 6 of his free throws, while his mates in the three-guard lineup Gino Domel and Joseph French handled the Chargers’ pressure and sixth man Danny Favela added a key tip-in in the final minute of the Green Wave’s 74-70 victory.

  • Geneva, St. Charles North set for early showdown Dec 3, 2014 3:56 PM
Here we go. The Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls basketball race came down to the final day of the season a year ago, Batavia and Geneva winning their games to share the championship. Batavia’s co-title was the most the Vikings have been pushed since Geneva joined the Upstate Eight. They have owned the area’s bragging rights lately, but to stay on top this year they are going to have to fend off several squads hoping to take their place. That starts with their first conference game of the year Thursday night and a trip to St. Charles North.

  • Aurora Central shoots Montini into submission Dec 3, 2014 9:06 PM
Montini opened up its boys basketball season by taking the first lead of the game against Aurora Central Catholic. But it would be the only deficit the Chargers would face as Brett Czerak drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing trip. The work ‘harbinger’ is perhaps most apt to describe what transpired over the next three-plus quarters at the Burney Wilkie Classic, hosted by Aurora Christian. ACC drained 16 3-pointers during the course of its 81-45 blowout win Wednesday night in Aurora.

Glenbard South junior Payton Carli might be one of the shorter players on the basketball court, but that doesn’t mean she won’t come up big, even in the paint where some of the much taller players reside.

  • Aurora Central Catholic drops season opener Dec 2, 2014 9:55 PM
Aurora Central Catholic joined Aurora Christian’s Burney Wilkie Classic for the first time this year, which in addition to keeping the Chargers closer to home it also delayed the start of their season a week. That was fine with coach Nate Drye. The players? Not so much. “The kids have been itching to play,” Drye said. “I haven’t been itching to play. There would have been a mutiny if we went another week of practice without a game. We could use probably another month of practice.” That showed at times during the Chargers’ season opener Tuesday, a 73-57 loss to a Joliet Catholic team that already had four games under its belt.
