Scouting Tri-Cities area boys volleyball teamsMar 22, 2013 12:00 AM
In just its second year with a boys volleyball program in 2012, Geneva went 17-12 and tied St. Charles East for the Upstate Eight Conference River title. While starting a team can often lead to years of growing pains and losing seasons, Vikings coach KC Johnsen thinks he knows why the Vikings have been successful so quickly. "We've been lucky that some really good athletes have decided to give volleyball a try," Johnsen said. "That makes a lot of difference. They pick it up very fast and move well on the court and are competitive guys and jump a little bit. Makes it a quicker jump start. (We wouldn't have won so fast) if we didn't have such good athletes."

So much for Spring fever. It certainly hasn't felt like baseball weather these days. Bone-chilling temperatures have been the norm instead of the exception this month while shoveling snow has been much more commonplace than seeing local baseball or softball players swinging bats outdoors. At this point, I'd actually settle for a few 45-degree afternoons rather than the 30-degree temperatures that we've been experiencing lately across Chicagoland. But believe it or not, baseball season is just around the corner — I think. Weather permitting, of course. Nobody is looking forward to the first pitch of the 2013 season more than Kane County Cougars general manager Curtis Haug.

Looking back at the best of the basketball season Mar 13, 2013 12:00 AM
As the high school boys basketball season enters its final week, one important question remains — can anyone stop Simeon from capturing its fourth consecutive Class 4A state championship this weekend in Peoria? West Aurora, which suffered a 60-47 loss to the 3-time defending state champions in the finals of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament back in late December, found itself one half away from another crack at the top-ranked Wolverines until a 17-0 third-quarter run by Proviso East in Tuesday night's Hinsdale Central supersectional ended the Blackhawks' season. Proviso East's 62-52 come-from-beind win sets up a rematch of last year's 4A state title game — won by Simeon in an instant classic, 50-48. It has been 5 years since the last non-Chicago Public League team captured the 4A state title — Richards in 2008. Here is my personal recap of the 2012-13 boys/girls basketball season:

Saying goodbye to seniors never an easy job Mar 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Win and advance. Lose and go home. Those are the basics when describing the annual Illinois High School Association’s boys basketball tournament. However, it doesn’t tell the entire story. In fact, it’s an oversimplification that barely scratches the surface.

  • St. Francis going back to sectional Mar 1, 2013 12:00 AM
It was a coaches’ showcase and a defensive grinder, a Suburban Catholic Conference Blue Division battle at the Class 3A IMSA regional final in Aurora. In the end St. Francis had a tad more than Aurora Central Catholic.

  • Aurora Central stuns Wheaton Academy Feb 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Nate Drye did not hesitate when deciding to roll the dice. “I didn’t want to play overtime,” the Aurora Central Catholic boys basketball coach said. “We had come too far to go into overtime.” Anthony Andujar made his mentor look like a genius. The ACC senior guard drained a 3-pointer — his first field goal of the game — with three seconds remaining to give the Chargers a 1-point lead over top-seeded Wheaton Academy Wednesday night of the Class 3A IMSA regional semifinal in Aurora.

  • ACC, Kaneland advance at IMSA regional Feb 25, 2013 12:00 AM
The packed bleachers at IMSA for a Class 3A regional quarterfinal could mean only one thing. Marmion was playing Aurora Central Catholic in boys basketball.

  • Geneva’s Nate Navigato, pictured dunking on a fast break against St. Charles East earlier this season in Geneva, heads into regional play Monday after scoring 23 of his team’s 36 points in a win over Bartlett Friday night.

Everyone shares a goal next week — survive and advance Feb 23, 2013 12:00 AM
There are a few weeks of the year that I enjoy a little more than most. This coming week is one of them. Monday night signals the opening tip-off of the Illinois High School Association's annual basketball tournament at gymnasiums throughout the state. It's America's Original March Madness with a 4-day head start this time around that I like to call, "February Frenzy."

  • St. Charles North’s Quinten Payne soars in for a dunk against Streamwood — one of countless jams the athletic senior has thrown down the past three years for the North Stars.

No questions about what ‘Q’ has meant to Poulin, N. Stars Feb 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Known to many as "Q," Quinten Payne has made quite an impact on the St. Charles North's basketball program since his arrival as a sophomore two years ago. After averaging 12.3 points and 5 rebounds per game as a sophomore, Payne earned all-Upstate Eight Conference River Division honors for the second straight season a year ago while scoring 17 points and snaring 6.7 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot-4 guard has saved the best for last during his senior campaign this season.

  • Marmion smokes Aurora Central Feb 15, 2013 12:00 AM
They were complete and utter daggers. Any chance the Aurora Central Catholic boys basketball team had of coming back against Marmion were completely evaporated when Alex Theisen hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter Friday night at Marmion in Aurora. The 12-point lead Marmion enjoyed to start the quarter soon swelled to 18 points after the twin Theisen connections, and the Cadets never looked back in their 60-36 Suburban Christian Conference victory.

  • Aurora Central falls at buzzer Feb 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Lisa Rodriquez has been to the mountaintop when it comes to high school athletics. The Aurora Central Catholic senior was a sprint-relay state champion two years ago at Aurora Christian in track and field. Thursday night in Westchester, Rodriquez, a returning member of the ACC Class 2A state-trophy girls basketball team, hit arguably the biggest shot of her career to tie Nazareth in the waning seconds of the St. Joseph Class 3A regional championship. But the heroics Rodriquez authored were eclipsed at the buzzer as Nazareth senior guard Kayla Freeman hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Roadrunners past the Chargers 47-44.

  • Aurora Central pulls regional surprise Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Aurora Central Catholic 71, St. Joseph 66: The 11th-seeded Chargers (14-14) advanced to the St. Joseph regional title game by knocking off the hosts.

  • Aurora Central wins regional opener Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Senior Lisa Rodriguez scored 20 points and Aurora Central Catholic's man defense held Clemente to 17 points through three quarters to defeat Clemente 45-29 in the opening round of the Class 3A St Joseph regional Monday night.

  • Sophomore Katie Claussner has given St. Charles East a big spark lately as the Saints get ready for regional play Monday.

St. Charles East regional could be a classic Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
This week’s St. Charles East Class 4A girls basketball regional tournament has a definitive Upstate Eight Conference River Division feel to it.

  • Aurora Central sinks St. Francis in 4th quarter Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Aurora Central Catholic 50, St. Francis 43: Entering the fourth quarter, the Chargers (13-9, 5-4) and Spartans (17-5, 5-3) were tied at 34-34 before the Chargers went on a 16-9 run to close the game and win the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division matchup in Wheaton.
