A former Antioch man found guilty of kidnapping and home invasion in Lake Villa was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday. Miguel Rico's sentence will begin when he finishes serving the 30 years behind bars he received for a similar crime he committed in Antioch Township, Lake County Judge Daniel Shanes said. That's 60 years in prison for Rico, who is 20 years old.

Ice fisherman not hurt after going in water at East Loon Lake Jan 4, 2013 12:00 AM
A 60-year-old Gurnee man was not hurt after plunging into a lake while ice fishing in unincorporated Antioch Township, authorities said Friday. Antioch Fire Department Chief John Nixon said a resident in the 40700 block of Champaign Drive on East Loon Lake, just north of Grass Lake Road, summoned rescue personnel at 1:47 p.m. Thursday after seeing the man in water up to his neck. The ice was only about 2 inches thick, Nixon said.

The Illinois Department of Public Health will consider suspending the paramedic license of the Antioch Rescue Squad's retired chief for failing to address a litany of misconduct problems, state officials confirmed Friday. The notice sent Nov. 14 said the IDPH will conduct a hearing into the actions of Wayne Sobczak that could result in the loss of his Illinois paramedic license for a year.

A former Antioch Rescue Squad treasurer facing felony theft charges turned himself in to authorities Wednesday, a day after an arrest warrant was issued because he missed a court hearing. John W. Edgell 54, of the 40000 block of Deep Lake Road in Antioch, said he was told the wrong court date during a previous hearing. Officials agreed to drop the warrant, and Edgell was freed with a new Jan. 8 court date.

Arrest warrant issued for former Antioch Rescue Squad treasurer Dec 4, 2012 12:00 AM
Already facing felony theft charges, the Antioch Rescue Squad's former treasure is now the target of an arrest warrant for failing to show up in court as required Tuesday. Unless he turns himself in, John W. Edgell will be arrested and held in Lake County jail on a $50,000 warrant, Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Kenneth Lorenz said.

Antioch Rescue Squad treasurer charged in theft from agency Oct 19, 2012 12:00 AM
John Edgell, the former treasurer of the Antioch Rescue Squad, has been charged with felony theft after stealing more than $10,000 from the troubled agency, authorities said. Edgell is due in bond court Saturday morning. If convicted, he faces three to seven years in prison and up to a $25,000 fine.

Opening statements are expected Tuesday in the trial of a former Antioch man charged in a 2010 kidnapping and home invasion in Lake Villa. Miguel Rico is on trial for aggravated home invasion, aggravated kidnapping and armed violence charges in connection with the break-in of a home in 2010. Police said Rico pointed a gun at the victim, bound him with duct tape and zip ties, then fled with the stolen property in the victim’s Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The Antioch Rescue Squad board of directors will be replaced and other changes implemented under a plan of correction the troubled squad has sent to the Illinois Department of Public Health. The changes come on the heels of a scathing IDPH letter regarding problems and unprofessional behavior. Debbie Otto said said she chose numbers that "looked right" when she was picking Powerball numbers on Aug. 8. The Antioch Township woman matched five numbers to win $1 million from the jackpot. She said she'll take the lump sum payment of $700,000. "I'm real excited," she said Wednesday.

Rockford man linked to armed robberies in Zion, Waukegan Aug 28, 2012 12:00 AM
A Rockford man who was injured in a high-speed crash after the armed robbery of an Antioch gas station is now also accused of stickups at stations in Zion and Waukegan, Lake County State's Attorney officials said Tuesday. Kenneth Cooper, 33, is now charged with four total counts of armed robbery and a single count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, Assistant States Attorney Tim Niehus said Tuesday.

Antioch will continue to receive emergency medical service from the embattled Antioch Rescue Squad through an inaugural, short-term contract. The village board approved the 90-day pact that will provide it some controls over the squad that is under scrutiny by a state agency regarding its operations. "If it ain't fixed, get rid of them,” Trustee Scott Pierce said.

Two EMTs could lose their licenses amid allegations they abused and mistreated patients and co-workers while working at the Antioch Rescue Squad, state officials confirmed. The Illinois Department of Public Health officials said they are investigating the conduct of Kyle Shouse and Chris McBrady and will decide if they should ever again work as EMTs or paramedics.
