    A child was struck by a car on the 300 block of Ida Avenue Saturday night, according to Antioch Fire Department Chief John Nixon. The child, whose condition was not immediately known, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

    The former treasurer of the Antioch Rescue Squad pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft in Lake County court Tuesday. John Edgell, 55, formerly of Antioch Township, must repay $25,000 to the Antioch Rescue Squad, perform 100 hours of public service, and have no contact with the ARS under the negotiated plea agreement.

     
  • 8 Antioch students hospitalized for taking pills return to class Oct 31, 2013 7:12 AM
    Eight of 10 students hospitalized Tuesday for coming into contact with prescription medication at Antioch Upper Grade School were back in class Wednesday. An ninth student remains hospitalized Wednesday, but not for injesting the hydrocodone, authorities said. The 10th student, who brought the drugs to school, was advised to not return until the investigation is completed.

    Three people were injured Friday afternoon in a multivehicle crash on Route 173 in Antioch, authorities said. Two cars and a semitruck were involved in the collision at 2101 E. Route 173 that was reported to authorities at 4:26 p.m., according to Antioch Deputy Fire Chief Chris Lienhardt.

    A former Antioch-area volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician already facing charges of having sex with an underage girl, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges involving a second victim. Matthew Bielecki, 40, of the 43000 block of Mary Avenue in Antioch, shook his head in shock as each of the new 29 counts of sex-related crimes were described to him by Lake County Judge James Booras.

     
  • Antioch Rescue to staff vacant station this summer May 9, 2013 5:30 AM
    The Antioch Rescue Squad plans to begin staffing an unused fire station to better serve the Chain O' Lakes and Antioch area during the busy summer months. In addition, officials said squad members for the first time will be paid a stipend for uniforms, fuel and training to help offset some of their personal costs of volunteering.

    The former treasurer of the Antioch Rescue Squad has been offered a plea deal that would force him to pay more than $20,000 to the agency from which hes accused of stealing money. John W. Edgell, 54, is considering whether to accept the deal offered by the Lake County prosecutors that would keep him out of jail on charges of theft of more than $500, defense attorney Cynthia Pruim-Haran said Thursday.

     
  • Man on ATV falls through ice in Antioch Feb 22, 2013 5:09 PM
    A man riding his ATV on a lake in Antioch fell through thin ice and had to be rescued Friday afternoon, authorities said. Rescue crews were called to Lake Marie at 1:05 p.m. to find the victim, described as a man in his 30s, clinging to his ATV and up to his chest in water about 50 feet from the shoreline.

  • Retired Antioch rescue chief agrees to have paramedic license reduced Feb 14, 2013 2:21 PM
    Retired Antioch Rescue Squad Chief Wayne Sobczak is not legally allowed to be a paramedic for one year as punishment for failing to address misconduct within the organization he oversaw, state officials confirmed Thursday. Under the voluntary license reduction agreement Sobczak reached with the Illinois Department of Public Health in late 2012, Sobczak will retain his basic emergency medical technician license for one year and is allowed to reapply for a new paramedic license in December, officials said.

     
  • Antioch passes one day contract for embattled rescue squad Feb 13, 2013 10:20 PM
    The Antioch Rescue Squad should not expect another rubber stamped 90-contract when they go before the village board Monday, officials warned Wednesday. Antioch trustees Scott Pierce and Dennis Crosby both said that they would not just pass another 90-day contract unless some major changes are made at the embattled rescue squad.
