Antioch Rescue to staff vacant station this summer May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The Antioch Rescue Squad plans to begin staffing an unused fire station to better serve the Chain O' Lakes and Antioch area during the busy summer months. In addition, officials said squad members for the first time will be paid a stipend for uniforms, fuel and training to help offset some of their personal costs of volunteering.

Man on ATV falls through ice in Antioch Feb 22, 2013 12:00 AM
A man riding his ATV on a lake in Antioch fell through thin ice and had to be rescued Friday afternoon, authorities said. Rescue crews were called to Lake Marie at 1:05 p.m. to find the victim, described as a man in his 30s, clinging to his ATV and up to his chest in water about 50 feet from the shoreline.

Retired Antioch Rescue Squad Chief Wayne Sobczak is not legally allowed to be a paramedic for one year as punishment for failing to address misconduct within the organization he oversaw, state officials confirmed Thursday. Under the voluntary license reduction agreement Sobczak reached with the Illinois Department of Public Health in late 2012, Sobczak will retain his basic emergency medical technician license for one year and is allowed to reapply for a new paramedic license in December, officials said.

Authorities on Friday called off the second day of searching for a 62-year-old man who is missing in Loon Lake near Antioch. Dive teams spent about nine hours Friday in the lake, located near the intersection of Route 83 and Grass Lake Road, using side-scan sonar equipment in what has been classified a "recovery" operation. The search was suspended about 2:30 p.m. Friday, but crews will be back to the lake on Saturday morning and possibly in the evening, authorities said.

Dive teams have returned to the shores of west Loon Lake this morning to resume the search for the body of a 62-year-old man who was unable to get back on a boat in Antioch Township on Thursday afternoon. Deputy Chief Chris Leinhardt of the Antioch Fire Protection District said boats returned to Loon Lake at about 7 a.m. Friday, and had side-scan sonar in the water by 7:15 a.m.

The Antioch Rescue Squad is being sued by its former paramedic contractor for not paying for services, breaking its contract and stealing employees, according to a lawsuit filed this week. Metro Paramedic Services of Elmhurst filed the suit in Lake County circuit court, claiming the rescue squad terminated its three-year contract without warning on June 15.

Fire destroyed at least three mobile homes and seriously damaged a fourth Tuesday at an Antioch Township trailer park serving mostly temporary residents who stay there on weekends while boating on the adjacent Chain O' Lakes. There were no injuries reported and officials do not believe the cause of the fire to be suspicious.

A Wadsworth teen suffered life-threatening injuries when his car crossed the centerline on Grass Lake Road near Antioch and hit another vehicle head-on, authorities said. Phillip Brahm, 17, of the 0 to 100 block of Sarah Drive in Wadsworth, was traveling east when he struck a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old female about 2 p.m. Saturday.
