Antioch Rescue to staff vacant station this summer May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The Antioch Rescue Squad plans to begin staffing an unused fire station to better serve the Chain O' Lakes and Antioch area during the busy summer months. In addition, officials said squad members for the first time will be paid a stipend for uniforms, fuel and training to help offset some of their personal costs of volunteering.

The former treasurer of the Antioch Rescue Squad has been offered a plea deal that would force him to pay more than $20,000 to the agency from which he’s accused of stealing money. John W. Edgell, 54, is considering whether to accept the deal offered by the Lake County prosecutors that would keep him out of jail on charges of theft of more than $500, defense attorney Cynthia Pruim-Haran said Thursday.

Man on ATV falls through ice in Antioch Feb 22, 2013 12:00 AM
A man riding his ATV on a lake in Antioch fell through thin ice and had to be rescued Friday afternoon, authorities said. Rescue crews were called to Lake Marie at 1:05 p.m. to find the victim, described as a man in his 30s, clinging to his ATV and up to his chest in water about 50 feet from the shoreline.

Retired Antioch Rescue Squad Chief Wayne Sobczak is not legally allowed to be a paramedic for one year as punishment for failing to address misconduct within the organization he oversaw, state officials confirmed Thursday. Under the voluntary license reduction agreement Sobczak reached with the Illinois Department of Public Health in late 2012, Sobczak will retain his basic emergency medical technician license for one year and is allowed to reapply for a new paramedic license in December, officials said.

The Antioch Rescue Squad should not expect another rubber stamped 90-contract when they go before the village board Monday, officials warned Wednesday. Antioch trustees Scott Pierce and Dennis Crosby both said that they would not just pass another 90-day contract unless some major changes are made at the embattled rescue squad.

The notice sent Nov. 14 said the IDPH will conduct a hearing into the actions of Wayne Sobczak that could result in the loss of his Illinois paramedic license for a year.

One person was injured and a dog was killed in a house fire near Antioch, fire officials said Wednesday. Antioch Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Chris Leinhardt said firefighters were called to the 39000 block of Circle Drive at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday for a home that was fully engulfed in flames.

Crews still trying to locate man’s body in Antioch lakeJun 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Authorities on Friday called off the second day of searching for a 62-year-old man who is missing in Loon Lake near Antioch. Dive teams spent about nine hours Friday in the lake, located near the intersection of Route 83 and Grass Lake Road, using side-scan sonar equipment in what has been classified a "recovery" operation. The search was suspended about 2:30 p.m. Friday, but crews will be back to the lake on Saturday morning and possibly in the evening, authorities said.

Divers resume search for missing man on Loon Lake Jun 28, 2012 12:00 AM
Dive teams have returned to the shores of west Loon Lake this morning to resume the search for the body of a 62-year-old man who was unable to get back on a boat in Antioch Township on Thursday afternoon. Deputy Chief Chris Leinhardt of the Antioch Fire Protection District said boats returned to Loon Lake at about 7 a.m. Friday, and had side-scan sonar in the water by 7:15 a.m.

Antioch Rescue Squad accused in lawsuit of not paying contractor Jun 22, 2012 12:00 AM
The Antioch Rescue Squad is being sued by its former paramedic contractor for not paying for services, breaking its contract and stealing employees, according to a lawsuit filed this week. Metro Paramedic Services of Elmhurst filed the suit in Lake County circuit court, claiming the rescue squad terminated its three-year contract without warning on June 15.

Mobile homes destroyed in Antioch area fire Jun 12, 2012 12:00 AM
Fire destroyed at least three mobile homes and seriously damaged a fourth Tuesday at an Antioch Township trailer park serving mostly temporary residents who stay there on weekends while boating on the adjacent Chain O' Lakes. There were no injuries reported and officials do not believe the cause of the fire to be suspicious.

Antioch plans ‘wetting down’ ceremony to welcome first new fire engine since 2000 May 16, 2012 12:00 AM
On May 29, the Antioch Fire Department will welcome its first new fire truck sinc 2000 and host an event featuring the century-old rituals of 'wetting down' the new truck. We were talking amongst fire fighters about a way to formalize the vehicle coming into the station for the first time, Fire Chief John Nixon said. We wanted to make it an event, so citizens could get involved.

Antioch to close dispatch center, lay off 12 employees to because of budget shortfall Apr 18, 2012 12:00 AM
The Antioch 9-1-1 dispatch center will shut its doors in 21 days for budget reasons, eliminating the jobs of 12 employees and forcing other agencies to find new emergency dispatch services. Police Chief Craig Somerville said the decision was one of the toughest things hes had to do as chief.

Wadsworth teen, Crystal Lake woman injured in head-on crash Dec 12, 2011 12:00 AM
A Wadsworth teen suffered life-threatening injuries when his car crossed the centerline on Grass Lake Road near Antioch and hit another vehicle head-on, authorities said. Phillip Brahm, 17, of the 0 to 100 block of Sarah Drive in Wadsworth, was traveling east when he struck a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old female about 2 p.m. Saturday.
