    Stevenson’s girls basketball team keeps winning. Taylor Buford scored a game-high 21 points, and the Patriots defeated visiting Zion-Benton 56-45 Tuesday night to improve to 10-0 and 4-0 in the North Suburban Lake Division.

    Mack Ohnsted has played a key role for the Augsburg men’s hockey team in its hot start to the 2014-15 season. The Stevenson High School graduate led the Auggies’ offense with a 3-point weekend (2 goals, 1 assist) when Augsburg (Minneapolis, Minn.) split with No. 13-ranked Saint John’s. In the win, the junior forward had the overtime game-winning goal over the Johnnies. For his performance, Ohnsted won the MIAC men’s hockey athlete of the week award.

    Stevenson’s scoring couldn’t get much more balanced Saturday night. The Patriots’ girls basketball team improved to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the North Suburban Lake Division, as four players notched 10 points in a 59-42 win over host Lake Zurich.

    It was a great day for area teams and individuals Saturday at the 30th annual Wheeling Memorial Wrestling Tournament. Perennial power Sandburg once again rolled to the championship with 262 points, but the fight for second place went down to the final round between the host Wildcats and Stevenson. Wheeling held a 3.5-point lead over the Patriots at the start of the final round, but the Wildcats pulled away with some great performances to capture runner-up honors over Stevenson, 176 to 161.5.

    Visiting Stevenson took another step toward its goals Friday night as the Patriots visited Lake Zurich in North Suburban Conference Lake Division wrestling action. Starting the dual meet at 285 pounds, the Pats got off to a good start with a 10-0 lead after two matches. But Stevenson really got rolling in the later stages of the meet as the Patriots wound up rolling to a 42-12 NSC Lake Division victory over the Bears.

    It was a game that began with a 4-point play. And maybe another early play told the tale. Unbeaten Stevenson actually missed a dunk, and the ball went all the way to the Libertyville bench, where a disgruntled Scott Bogumil (Libertyville’s coach) caught the basketball. The runaway Pats spurted to a 45-18 lead late in the second half. From that point on, the visitors from Libertyville battled back. No, it wasn’t enough as Stevenson (6-0, 2-0) prevailed 78-55 in North Suburban Lake play Wednesday.

    Sophia Way scored a game-high 18 points and sank four of Stevenson’s school-record-tying 12 3-pointers, as the host Patriots remained undefeated with a 60-46 win over Warren in North Suburban Lake Division action Tuesday night. Ashley Richardson also made four 3s for Stevenson (8-0, 2-0). Richardson and Taylor Buford sored 13 points apiece, while Janine Fajardo tallied her 9 points on a trio of 3-pointers.

    Danny Sabatello enjoyed one of the finest weeks of his collegiate wrestling career and received accolades from the Big Ten. The former Stevenson wrestler, now a 133-pound competitor for Purdue, was named the conference’s co-wrestler of the week.

    Saturday’s Grant triple-dual meet was a pretty good example of what really competitive wrestling is all about. Unlike pretty much every other season when one team has walked away with a perfect 3-0 record on the day, this year three teams — the host Bulldogs, Stevenson and Barrington had to settle for going 2-1 in this annual showdown.

    Stevenson has been on a roll. And not just in football and basketball. The Patriots’ boys bowling team captured its first tournament championship in school history Saturday, setting a school record for six games. The Patriots have been one of the strongest teams in the Northern Illinois Boys Bowling Conference through the first few weeks of the season. They kept their rapid pace in Vernon Hills’ 24-team invite, overtaking highly rated Rockton Hononegah in the last two games.

  • Stevenson High honors football team after state title win Dec 5, 2014 2:22 PM
    Stevenson High School feted the state-champion Patriots football team Friday in an early morning gathering at the Lincolnshire campus. The celebration came six days after the undefeated Patriots defeated Homewood-Flossmoor 31-25 to win the Class 8A title in Springfield. “It really gives us something to be proud of,” said freshman Emma Caraus.

     
  • Wrestling: Stevenson jumps out to an NSC Lake win Dec 5, 2014 1:01 AM
    Visiting Stevenson couldn’t have asked for a much better start to its North Suburban Conference wrestling season Thursday night at Mundelein. Starting at 170 pounds, the Patriots (3-0, 1-0) quickly jumped ahead of their long-time rivals 15-0 after three matches and they never looked back after that point in rolling to an impressive 51-14 NSC Lake Division victory over the Mustangs.

     
  • Big second half carries Stevenson past Cary-Grove Dec 5, 2014 10:17 PM
    It was a second half coach Rod Saffert and the Cary-Grove girls basketball team would like to totally wipe off the slate. With the game tied 23-23 at halftime, powerful Stevenson dominated the final 16 minutes and outscored the Trojans 32-13 in cruising to a 55-36 win in nonconference action in Cary Friday night.

    With multiple classes competing for state titles in most sports, we're crowning more state champions that ever before. That shouldn't the diminish the accomplishment of a team like Stevenson, which grabbed its first Class 8A state title this fall.
