  • Glenbard East handles Addison TrailApr 1, 2014 12:00 AM
With Tommy Mogavero and his Glenbard East baseball teammates playing their seventh game over four consecutive days Tuesday, focus was at a premium. “You just take it one game at a time. You can’t really think about what you’re going to do after,” Mogavero said. “You just have to make sure the energy you have, you use it for the game.” When it mattered most against Addison Trail, Mogavero was prepared. His 2-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning was the game-winning hit in the Rams’ 8-4 victory at the Plunkett Sports Complex in Elmhurst.

  • Addison Trail overcomes WillowbrookMar 20, 2014 12:00 AM
Injuries and obligations elsewhere left Addison Trail and Willowbrook nowhere near full strength during Thursday’s West Suburban Gold boys gymnastics meet in Addison. What it did do is make things rather interesting as the Blazers had to finish strong on high bar and parallel bars to edge Willowbrook 118.5 to 116.6.

  • Sommesi leading the way for AWF RenegadesMar 9, 2014 12:00 AM
In the third period of a game last October against Homewood-Flossmoor, Greg Sommesi of the co-op AWF Renegades ripped a slapshot from the blue line that was tipped in over the goalie’s glove into the upper corner of the net. It was quite a memorable moment for Sommesi, capping a convincing 10-1 win. It was, you see, Sommesi from Sommesi on the score sheet, as Greg’s shot was deflected in by his younger brother, Anthony, a junior in his first season on the varsity. And this is their first season ever as teammates. Greg, 17, a senior at Addison Trail in his third season on the varsity club, plays right defense, alongside senior Patrick Gorniak (Addison Trail), and is the team’s captain. He had 13 goals, 5 assists in 14 regular-season Illinois Suburban Division games.

Wheaton co-op off to flying start to seasonMar 8, 2014 12:00 AM
Wheaton co-op began its quest to win its third state title in a row by picking up three victories during Saturday’s quad in Glen Ellyn. The team pretty much picked up from where it left off at Lincoln-Way East last May, scoring 160.4 points, not too far off from the 161.65 that won state. Host Glenbard West posted an impressive 145.7 points in what was its first true meet of the season, while Fremd was third with a 129.6 and Addison Trail fourth with a 122.5.

Naperville Central’s Fox comes out of hidingFeb 22, 2014 12:00 AM
Naperville Central’s Jimmy Fox seemed to come out of nowhere to capture the 500 freestyle at the Metea Valley swimming and diving sectional on Saturday. But his performance, which saw him cut 22 seconds off his previous best time, was not entirely unexpected by his coach and Redhawks teammates.

  • Lake Park edges Wheaton for thirdFeb 22, 2014 12:00 AM
It was a battle until the end for third place between Lake Park and Wheaton co-op Saturday at the Downers Grove North boys swimming sectional. The Lancers’ prevailed by one-half point, 182 to 181.5, thanks to their victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the day. However, team results in sectional competition don’t have the weight that the actual number of state qualifiers a school has achieved has. A sectional meet is all about being good enough and fast enough to keep your season going another week.
