Castaway Camp helps kids explore STEM topics

Wishing you had signed up the kids for more adventures this summer? Know a youth interested in the environment, navigation, botany, nutrition, weather, or other sciences? It's not too late to check out University of Illinois Extension's Castaway Camp.

"Through our unique day camp experience, youth participants will gain practical life skills and an understanding of a variety of STEM principles," said Donna Nuger, 4-H youth development educator.

"Using the attention-catching story of being deserted on an island in the Great Lakes, we will guide youth through hands-on, fun activities to develop important skills. And we do it all without leaving the suburbs."

Designed for ages 9 to 14, the two-part Castaway Camp on Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 7 and 9, teaches topics such as first aid, solar power, plant and bird identification, compass reading, fire making and safety, outdoor cooking and more.

Youth do not need to be current 4-H members to register. Lunch is provided for both days of the two-part day camp, which meets in St. Charles.

To learn more or to register by Monday, July 30, visit go.illinois.edu/summer 4Hdkk. If you require a reasonable accommodation to participate, contact the extension office at least two weeks prior to the start date.
