Larry Gabriel retires from Geneva Park District after 38 years of dedicated service

Larry Gabriel, Superintendent of Parks and Properties, will retire from the Geneva Park District on June 22.

The Geneva Park District Board, staff and community are grateful for his 38 years of service.

"Larry has a big heart, not only for the Geneva Park District, but for the community. He has been an instrumental part of the Geneva Park District's success," said Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte.

Gabriel has led his team through several projects, both large and small.

Some of the most notable include the Skate Park, Moore Park Sprayground, Hawks Hollow Nature playground, The Links disc golf course, Wheeler Park greenhouse, Wheeler maintenance facility addition, and the north bridge at Island Park, which was named in his honor.

Other projects Gabriel has been instrumental in include playground, tennis court, and pavilion renovations; shore line stabilizations at Bennett and Stanley Esping parks; and the creation of natural areas throughout the park district.

"Larry's loyalty, reliability and excitement for his position are demonstrated in his superior work ethic that filters down through the entire district," Lambillotte said.

"My favorite part of my role for the Geneva Park District over these past 38 years has been having the ability to be outdoors and being able to work with my hands as well as my mind. It has been the ultimate reward," Gabriel said.

Gabriel began his career at the Geneva Park District in 1979 as the horticulturalist. He managed all the plantings in our parks. He was promoted to foreman at Peck Farm Park in 1998, and became the superintendent of Parks and Properties in 2001.

"His commitment to the district is evidenced by his ability to adapt and embrace change throughout the growth of the park district," said Susan VanderVeen, Geneva Park District board president.

In his retirement, Gabriel looks forward to enjoying time with his family, attending rock 'n' roll concerts including several tribute bands, and opening the next chapter in his life.
