• Bartlett High School junior Patrick Stephen was honored during the Accents on Achievement portion of a recent District U-46 board of education meeting for applying his classroom knowledge and ingenuity to win a contest involving technical ability.

Stephen designed the smartphone app "Student Driver," which helps student drivers track their time behind the wheel as they accrue the 50 hours of practice driving that is required to test for an Illinois driver's license.

The app was judged best in the 6th Congressional District as part of the nationwide Congressional App Challenge, a contest sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives to encourage kids to learn computer coding.

The win earned Stephen, who attends the Bartlett High School Academy for Science, Engineering and High Technology, a trip to Washington, D.C., in April. There, he and winners from across the country exhibited their winning apps, toured the nation's Capitol and had breakout sessions with technology leaders.

His app has been downloaded more than 400 times.
