Glen Ellyn swears in new police officer

Glen Ellyn police have welcomed their newest member to the force: officer Troy Bendoraitis.

Chief Phil Norton introduced Bendoraitis at a recent village board meeting before Village Clerk John Chereskin administered a ceremonial oath of office, reaffirming one the Plainfield native took at the time of his hiring two years ago.

Bendoraitis was working as a private investigator before he joined the department in January 2016. He went on to graduate from the University of Illinois Police Training Institute, successfully logged 16 weeks of field training with veteran officers, and completed a probationary period that lasted roughly one year.

"Troy is a hard worker and has already received a number of positive remarks from residents for his calm and professional manner during some very critical incidents," Norton told the village board.

The chief also shared a little-known tidbit about Bendoraitis, who was sworn in the day after turning 25.

"He graduated from Plainfield Central High School, where he was captain of the football team, and we learned today, captain of the math team, which is something I'm sure most of his fellow officers didn't know until this minute, but we'll surely be mentioning in the days to come," Norton said alongside a smiling Bendoraitis.

Bendoraitis also graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in criminal justice administration.
