Chicago Bears Roy Robertson-Harris wears custom cleats for kids

NFL Football players participated in the "My Cause My Cleats Initiative" on Dec. 3. In its second year, players are allowed to wear customized cleats that represent, or bring awareness to, causes near and dear to their hearts.

Roy Robertson-Harris, a defensive end for the Chicago Bears wore the custom designed cleats during the game against the San Francisco 49ers. He chose to call attention to the work of the Lake County Children's Advocacy Center.

"For the 'My Cause My Cleats' game this past Sunday, I supported the Children's Advocacy Center because I wanted to help raise awareness for child safety and child abuse prevention," Robertson-Harris said. "As a father myself, I recognize how important it is to protect our children and provide safe environments for them."

The Lake County Children's Advocacy Center is committed to providing a safe environment for child victims of abuse. The goal of the center is to investigate and help successfully prosecute offenders of child abuse without causing further trauma to the child victim. Furthermore, the Advocacy Center is dedicated to approaching victims of child abuse in a sensitive respectful manner. The LCCAC is a 501 (c)(3) organization.

"We were excited to learn that Roy Robertson-Harris chose us as the cause he wanted to support. He shares our commitment to the protection of the children of our community," State's Attorney Michael G. Nerheim said. "The Chicago Bears have been an outstanding community partner and we are grateful for their support."

Recently, the LCCAC revealed its Healing Garden. The Healing Garden serves as comfort to children and their families while present at the Lake County Children's Advocacy Center. It is an opportunity for them to alleviate the trauma they have undergone as well as to find a reflective space.

The Healing Garden was constructed with funds raised by the Lake County Children's Advocacy Center's Friends Committee.

In addition, more than 400 Lake County residents contributed to completing the construction of the Healing Garden and the contributions included donations from the Chicago Bears Hometown Huddle through United Way of Lake County.
