North Campus students give back to the community

Students from District 211's North Campus filled food packets at Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg as part of a program called The Circle of Courage. The students filled enough packets to feed 72 children for a year.

Jessica Quinterro, a social worker with North Campus, said the program has four key components, Belonging, Mastery, Independence and Generosity, which help students build a better sense of self-worth. Volunteering at Feed My Starving Children focused on the fourth component.

"We try to help the students realize the world is so much larger," she said. "The volunteer work helps them realize this while helping them give back to their community."

Quinterro said once the students saw who they were helping, they were very eager to help.

"They kept saying, 'Come on. We need to move faster,'" she said.

According to Quinterro, North Campus takes students to Feed My Starving Children to volunteer approximately once per month. She said they typically try to choose different students for each trip, however, some students have had the opportunity to volunteer multiple times.
