Mundelein Arts Commission announces contest winners

The Mundelein Arts Commission has announced the winners in its two writing contests, one for short stories and one for short plays.

According to a commission spokesperson, the contests drew responses from all over Lake County. Prizes were offered in the amounts of $50, $30 and $20 for the top three entries in each contest.

In the Short Story contest, Linda J. Frederick of Mundelein took first place for her story "Undercurrents." Second place went to Nancy Taylor of Mundelein for "Going Home," and Heather Williams, also of Mundelein, claimed third place for "Summer Vacation."

In addition to the top three prizes, all short stories that were entered will be published in an anthology, "Mundelein Writes: Home."

In the 10-Minute Play contest, first place went to Jessica Motyka of Vernon Hills for "Love, Iniquitous." Second place went to Jeff Burd of Gurnee for "Funeral," and Susan Mocarski of Lake Bluff won third place for "The Shoe Game."

In addition, the top three plays will be produced in a workshop format and presented to the public at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Mundelein Village Hall, 300 Plaza Circle, Mundelein.

Judges for the two events were award-winning Mundelein author Richard Thomas for the short story contest, and local professional actor/director Bob Sanders for the play competition.
