Aurora librarian details safe solar eclipse-viewing

Pat Schwartz, Aurora Public Library teen librarian, explored safe solar eclipse viewing at the library's West Branch Thursday, Aug. 10.

She opened her presentation by demonstrating construction of a telescope sun funnel for safe solar eclipse viewing. Schwartz distributed free safety glasses for direct solar viewing to cap her program.

She said the public is invited to free eclipse viewing parties at library West and Eola branches and the downtown location from 11:50 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21.

Visitors may bring pinhole viewers or use the library's solar funnel to view the eclipse. In case of rain, a monitor will be set up inside the libraries.

In the Chicago area, 85 percent of the sun will be covered by the moon during the eclipse.
