Get outdoors with the Schaumburg Library

If you prefer to spend your time outdoors in summer, look at what the Schaumburg Library has to offer. From culture to education to entertainment, the library is all about fun in the sun.

Love music? There are still several concerts scheduled in Schaumburg's Town Square, at the corner of Schaumburg and Roselle roads. For those who enjoy a variety of music styles, Semple will perform songs ranging from the Rolling Stones to Michael Jackson to punk rock from 6:45-8:15 p.m. Monday, July 17.

Concerts will continue throughout July and into August, so be sure to see the library's guide that gets mailed to Schaumburg Township residents. Inside, you will find a full listing of concerts and other performances. The schedule is also available at www.schaumburglibrary.org.

A new outdoor event for the library this year is StoryWalk, jointly sponsored by the library and Schaumburg Park District. StoryWalk is a great way to combine reading with nature.

Pages of a children's book are posted along the grassy and wooded trails of Spring Valley Nature Center in Schaumburg, beginning at the spot where the Bison's Bluff playground meets the prairie path.

StoryWalk is open anytime the nature center is open, but the library also has a special StoryWalk Event. All ages are welcome to attend "StoryWalk Storytime and Fort Building" from 10:30-11 a.m. Friday, July 28, at the nature center's Bison's Bluff playground.

For teens, the annual "Road Rally" will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, in Town Square, though it begins and ends in the library's Teen Place.

Teens can register as individuals or in teams, then come to the rally to scour Town Square for clues and treasure. When the scavenger hunt is done, participants will be welcome to enjoy an ice cream sundae bar in Teen Place. To participate, you must wear close-toed shoes and sign a waiver, which can be obtained by sending an email to teen@stdl.org.

Looking for a great day trip? Check out the library's schedule of bus trips in the June-July Guide, or see the list at www.SchaumburgLibrary.org.

A variety of trips have been planned to suit many types of interests. Some are filled, but many still have openings. You may register for trips online, by phone, or in person at the Information Desk on the second floor.

In addition to these and many other programs, classes and events, the library has its Summer Challenge continuing until Aug. 31. Sign up for "Reading by Design" and log your summer reading and activities as you earn badges and work toward the final prize.

The library's online log makes it easy to track your progress. To sign up for Reading by Design, go to www.SchaumburgLibrary.org/read. Attending some of the events listed in this article will help you complete the challenge.

Love summer? Come to the library and enjoy a plethora of fun-in-the-sun events, trips and activities.
