District 59 alum soars to Eagle Scout status
Almost everyone has at least heard of the Boy Scouts of America, and many District 59 families either participate in BSA activities themselves or know someone who does.
What may be a lot less common is to know someone who has reached the level of Eagle Scout through the BSA. According to the National Eagle Scout Association's website, Eagle Scout status, the highest rank possible, is achieved by only 5 percent of all BSA members and "has always carried with it a special significance, not only in Scouting but also in higher education, business or industry, and community service."
District 59 would like to congratulate Nicholas S. Rosenorn, who not only is a District 59 alum of both Brentwood Elementary School and Friendship Junior High schools, but earned his Eagle Scout status by helping renovate the exterior of Rupley Elementary School.
Terry Runde, Des Plaines Troop 160 Scoutmaster, said that Rosenorn has been a member of Troop 160 for many years and has a deep interest in community service and helping others.
"What makes attaining the rank of Eagle Scout so difficult is that it requires the Scout to be very focused on setting and reaching that particular goal," Runde said.
"What makes it even more impressive for Nick to attain the rank at his young age is the number of other activities he not only participates in, but excels at - varsity swimming, water polo and marching band."
"Not only does Nick's Eagle Scout service project beautify Rupley's exterior for many years to come," said Dr. Art Fessler, superintendent of District 59, "but it also exemplifies all we strive to teach our students about being a good community member who gives back to others. We are so grateful for his service to our district, and we couldn't be prouder to see our former student receive this prestigious recognition."
Since Eagle projects need to benefit a non-Scout, nonprofit organization, District 59 and Rupley Elementary were a great fit for Rosenorn. He chose as his project to renovate a garden area in front of Rupley Elementary by providing a landscape of plants, trees and shrubs.
He also altered the existing design by leveling the ground with dirt and mulch and adding a new perimeter of garden bricks. Rosenorn's project coordinated the efforts of over a dozen volunteers that spanned over a couple of weekends, and he also worked closely with Eric Swanson, director for maintenance operations at District 59.
In honor of Rosenorn's achievement, BSA Troop 160 will have an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on June 10 at St. Zachary Church, in Des Plaines. This event provides the opportunity for the troop, family, other Eagle Scouts, friends, and others to formally recognize and honor the achievement.
Rosenorn will receive an Eagle binder that commemorates the special occasion with letters of thanks and recognition of his achievements.
Rupley Principal Dr. Thomas Seaton points out how fitting it is "Nick's garden" also contains the Rupley Peace Pole, which symbolizes the school's desire to create a peaceful school environment.
"Each year on Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace, our entire school gathers around the Peace Pole," said Dr. Seaton.
"I will think of Nick during this celebration, and his enduring gift to our school. I hope he will continue to make the world a beautiful place through his good works."
