Wheeling Park District celebrates Earth Day on Sunday at Heritage Park

Wheeling Park District celebrates Earth Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Park, 333 W. Dundee Road. The free event features nature tours, live animal presentations, a beehive exhibit, recycling services, arts and crafts, and live music, along with a variety of activities and giveaways.

The Wheeling Garden Club will help participants take part in expanding the butterfly garden started at last year's event. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago will give out tree saplings. L.L. Bean will set up an interactive campsite activity to demonstrate responsible outdoor recreation. Representatives from Heller Nature Center will oversee a beehive booth and talk about the role bees play in the ecosystem. The Forest Preserve of Cook County River Trail Nature Center will bring a live reptile.

A shred truck will be available on-site, with each person limited to two legal-size boxes of papers. Used books in any condition will be collected and recycled by SCARCE, a Glen Ellyn-based organization. Books in usable condition are distributed to teachers and nonprofits. The Holmes Middle School Jazz Combo will provide live music.
