Boys tennis: Barrington, Glenbrook South end up tied for sixth

Barrington's boys tennis team collected as many points as it could during the first two days of the Class 2A state tournament.

And then the Broncos crossed their fingers, hoping they would not fall out of a sixth-place tie with Glenbrook South in the team standings.

The Titans were not able to add to their total on Saturday, meaning the MSL champions and Glenbrook South came away sharing sixth place after finishing with 13 points.

"The boys had a very nice run here at the tournament," said Barrington coach John Roncone. "We have a group that can be competitive once again next year if we put in the time during the off-season."

Dylan Er/Kyle Shuff enjoyed the best results of the four Barrington entrants. The Broncos' No. 1 doubles team won its first three of the tournament to reach the round of 16 before dropping their quarterfinal to eventual third-place finisher Naperville Central (Martin Matov/Ammaar Saeed) before eliminated 6-2, 7-5 by Ben Riad and Ethan Park of Glenbrook North.

"The boys were up 5-2 in their second set, but couldn't finish off a strong GBN team that won the next five to close them out," said Roncone.

Bradley Yu, Ammar Wazir and the Broncos' No. 2 tandem, Suven Sinha/Aryan Sharma, all contributed to the Broncos' scoring after leading the effort toward a sixth straight Mid-Suburban League title.

Wazir (22-5) won an MSL singles title at No. 2, while Er/Shuff (20-3) did the same at No. 2 doubles.

"Our depth really came through at the MSL tournament - especially at doubles, where all four of our teams did their part to earn valuable points," said Roncone.

Barrington saw its day end early on Saturday morning - but not so for state powers Stevenson and New Trier, who stayed within striking distance of Hinsdale Central until the Red Devils close out the competition thanks to Zack Elliot, who won the singles title over Lyons Township freshman Dominick Cuchran.

Elliot (26-3), who will play next fall at Lehigh University, was nearly flawless in his second set against the LOT freshman. That helped boost the Red Devils far ahead of Stevenson and New Trier with 44 points. The Pats and Trevians tied for second with 33.

It's Hinsdale Central's fifth state title in the last seven years.

Chicago University and Normal University shared the Class 1A team title after both clubs earned 28 points over the three days, 1 more than the Latin School of Chicago.
