Baseball: Schwartz's big day lifts Lake Zurich
Jake Schwartz pitched 1-hit baseball over 4 innings and helped himself at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double, as Lake Zurich beat visiting Zion-Benton 10-0 in six innings in a play-in game of the Class 4A Libertyville regional on Tuesday.
No. 14 Lake Zurich visits No. 3 Libertyville on Wednesday.
Anthony Mangano paced Lake Zurich's 16-hit attack against 19th-seeded Zion-Benton, going 3-for-3 with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. The Bears' other offensive contributors included Austin Krause (2-for-2, walk, RBI), Tyler Snep (1-for-2, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Josh Anderson (2-for-4, RBI), Ben Cornelius (2-for-3, double) and Noah DeLuga (1-for-2, RBI).
Grayslake North 4, Hersey 3 (10 inn.): At Grayslake North, the 16th-seeded Knights scored in the bottom of the 10th to edge the 17th-seeded Huskies in the play-in game of the Class 4A Palatine regional.
Jason Donohue and Austin DeLao each had a pair of hits for Grayslake North, and Andrew Keaskowski contributed a double.
Grayslake North will play top-seeded Buffalo Grove at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The Huskies first sent the game to extra innings with a tying run in the top of the seventh inning before a bases-loaded balk in the bottom of the 10th ended it. Jake Irwin helped Hersey (14-19-1) tie it with a two-out RBI single in the seventh.
The Huskies scored twice in the fourth, on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Clawson and an RBI single from Hunter Luke.
Cade O'Neal finished 3-for-4 and Cristian Rodriguez had a double for No. 17 seed Hersey.
Eddie Erickson tossed the last 2 scoreless innings to earn the victory.
Carmel 6, Fremd 2: The host Corsairs earned a nonconference win as both teams prepared for their playoff openers.
Lukas Galdoni and Jimmy Tarzon had 2 hits apiece for the Corsairs (19-10), and Galdoni and three Carmel pitchers combined on a 3-hitter. Galdoni and Brandon Banker doubled for Carmel. Banker and Austin Ehren each had 2 stolen bases.
Austin Higgins and Tommy Wingen drove in the runs for Fremd (15-12).
Fremd begins its postseason with a 4 p.m. Thursday game against Stevenson in the Class 4A regional at Libertyville, while Carmel is slated to start with a Wednesday matchup at 4:30 p.m. in the Class 3A Vernon Hills regional.
