Boys volleyball: Wheeling, Viator win at Glenbrook North
at Glenbrook North: The boys volleyball teams from Wheeling and St. Viator survived first-round postseason matchups on Monday at Glenbrook North.
Wheeling ousted Von Steuben 25-16, 25-14, and St. Viator topped Taft 25-18, 25-19.
The Wildcats got 7 kills apiece from Jared Moser and Jan Baranowski, along with 11 digs from Joseph Hernandez. Moser served up 5 aces and Baranowski had a team-best 4 blocks.
Wheeling, seeded No. 12, advances to a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup against No. 4 seed Palatine, the Mid-Suburban West's runner-up.
The No. 13 seed Lions get a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup with regional host Glenbrook North, the No. 4 seed in the Glenbrook South sectional.
at Lake Park: Rolling Meadows rolled through its first-round opponent, West Chicago, 25-18, 25-16.
Billy Tompkins had a team-best 5 kills on a 9-for-9 hitting effort, and Arthur Barczak and Greg Bouraoui had 4 kills apiece.
Barczak and Max Schertler had 2 blocks apiece, and Eric Vinopal and Schertler led the way with 4 digs each.
Next up for 18th-seeded Meadows is a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup against Lake Park, the No. 2 seed in the Addison Trail sectional.
at Geneva: Bartlett ended Hoffman Estates' season with a 25-23, 25-20 decision. Geneva was also a two-set winner at the same site.
at Highland Park: Prospect bowed out of the postseason with a 25-17, 25-15 loss to the regional hosts. The other winners at Highland Park were Niles West and Maine South.
at Niles North: Eighth-seeded Maine West picked up a forfeit win over its scheduled opponent, CICS Northtown, and will face No. 9 seed Glenbrook South in a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday regional semifinal at Niles North.
at Evanston: Buffalo Grove advanced with a 25-11, 25-12 decision over Christian Heritage Academy and next gets a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup against Loyola.
at Schaumburg: Fremd advanced with a 25-16, 25-11 triumph over Elgin as Aaron Peterson led the way with 10 kills and 7 aces. Martin Michalski added 6 kills and Rocco Stella 5 for the Vikings (17-12) while senior setter Jacob Peterson handed out 22 assists. The Vkiings meet the host Saxons at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
